for my app, I used

books: Foucault's Pendulum, Catch-22, and referenced the Da Vinci Code (though its not really among my favorites, it fit well)
plays: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
movies: Monty Python, of course

In general (in addition to the above)

books: Hitchhiker's Guide, Count of Monte Cristo (unabridged, much longer, but better), The Name of the Rose, 1984, Ender's Game, Crime and Punishment (McDuff's translation, there's another popular translation that seemed awkward to me) .... who knows how many I can't remember off the top of my head.

plays: The Phantom of the Opera (or would this be a musical or an opera) - Andrew Lloyd Webber's rendition

Movies: most Mel Brooks films, the original Batman, The Thomas Crown Affair, the first Matrix, Shawshank Redemption, etc.

Music: 60s to early 80s rock in general, "progressive" rock (Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, etc), rock operas, modern renditions of classical music (Savatage/Trans-Siberian Orchestra has some good ones)

Art: not particularly into it much but M.C. Escher is cool, Jacque-Louis David is awe inspiring, I mean repainting The Coronation of Napoleon from memory, and if you ever get the chance to go to the Louvre, you should go (and devote at least a day - some of the stuff they have is amazing)

note

I tend to like black comedy more than anything and that's what I focused on in my app, for those interested. I am under the impression that it is not so much how renowned your favorites are, but why they are your favorites.
