As we were driving onto the Yard, through officers quarters, I saw a woman walking her dog, a border collie, and I commented to her what a nice dog it was, and she said do you want him. I asked why and she and her husband were looking to downsize the amount of dogs they have. He is the German Professor at USNA. We got to talking and we made arrangement for us to adopt the dog. Call it fate, but it looks as though our first USNA Family member will be a dog. He was born there.

So what are you going to call him, eh?

Maybe we here on the forum can chime in with adopted nicknames like
PLEBE
YUT
BANCROFT
SEVERN

come on others - give xchefmike ideas!

Great idea, The best name as selected by our panel of judges, (the four siblings ages 7-17) will receive a gift card from NavyGear.com.
rules,
none really just a fun idea that grew legs of its own.

try to be creative and realize that we will be stuck trying to call this to a very excited and high energy breed of dog.

Mike

Border Collies are the BEST FAMILY DOGS known to man! And how funny how things works out.. great addition to your family! Since they are herder dogs and Bill the Goat is the USNA Mascot.. Maybe he should be BILL the GOAT DOG. :)

Just curious, what is his current name?

You could call him Jack or Dalton in honor of the original Bill the Goat nickname:

"The following year, another goat wore the blanket, and it was this mascot which was destined for fame. Originally called Bill, this goat was dubbed "Three-to-Nothing Jack Dalton" after the star midshipman who kicked the field goals that helped Navy defeat Army 3-0 for two successive years."

How about "Nassi" which is a play on the fact that the dog got to you because your son went to NASS, and "Nassi" sounds like Lassie which is also a collie

Hmm...maybe it's just me, but "Nassi" sounds and looks like "Nazi"....

How 'bout just "'Rah"?

BTW Peskemom, Janell and I are on the same ship, Farragut, this summer. I'm heading back to Annapolis on Friday, then down to Mayport probably on Sunday. If they allow mail, I hope I can get a taste of those cookies I've heard so much about!

-Dave

Hmmm....how about Joe?.....at least it is a common name, though it is derogatory!

joe...that's too funny!

nobody asked the sweet canine's gender--male or female?

Since the dog was part of the German professor's family, it was probably called Shatzie or Shatzie,jr., or Shatzie II...

Jack is my favorite male name; name him Cracker Jack (like the plebe pjs)
Zoe is a sweet female name.

You could always give him some good ol' Navy names like "Nimitz" or "Halsey". Or you could name him after something on The Yard like "Herndon" or "Tecumseh"...

Since he's the lowest ramking member of the family, he could be the "ensign" (but wait - that would mean he outranks your Plebe - not good. haha)...

...just some thoughts. Enjoy that new "family member"! Everytime you want to hug your Plebe, you can give the dog a good scratch behind the ears! Very therapeutic!

09mom - I like Jack / Cracker Jack! That's a good one!

(You were posting while I was writing & that's a good navy / plebe name I didn't think of!).

For the goodness sake....don't name it ANYTHING that has to do with the military!!!

Girl: Anna...short for Annapolis

Boy: JP...for John Paul Jones or Rodney for the last supe...I saw him a couple of times and he was high energy!

Bulkhead
Anchor
Corpen
Romeo
MOBOARD
Ol' Mid
Sounding
ATP1
YP
Seawall
Crabtown

Anna and JP are good, too. :)

LOL. Let them have their fun!

If you ask me, the best name for a German Shepherd is "Hannibal", but that's just me. ;)

name it Monster. :D

Oh, good grief! It was a border collie, not a GS!

I need a drink.

SandBlaster? As it'll be the shortest member of the Class?

My sister chimed in ...
Admiral

Neptune .. King Neptune from Davy Jones Locker
or
SALTY .. as in ole' SALTY DOG

+++

Z .. I always liked KILLER, DILLINGER or ADOLF for a German Shepherd .. not that it is a GS

Our NASSer will probably be amused at all of this. (he has no idea about this as he is at Session #3) We like the comments so far and have a few favorites. How about we keep this open til the 4th of July and we can pipe our new canine aboard officially then. I am picking up the Navygear gift card from peppers this weekend. Anyone want to get some crabs and beer at Buddy's see ya there on Friday at 13:00
