What does the star on the bottom left of a thread link mean? Like in the UCLA forum some threads have stars but they aren’t featured. I tried unfeaturing and unanouncing but they show up. Anyone else see that?
This the absolute worst update I’ve ever seen. A site that was once easy to navigate has been turned into a rabbit hole. Absolutely a horrible change. The good news it that whoever manages the site can read all the negative reviews and make the change back.
Thank you.
I thought the star meant bookmarked and the check mark means you’ve responded.
I checked - the star means “Featured.” I unfeatured the thread in the UCLA Forum, @10s4life.
I think what austinmshauri is saying is why should we (regular members ) bother with helping police the site (by flagging etc) when it’s obvious by the lack of response by TPTB that they couldn’t care less about members of this board and their issues regarding this failed update. Their. lack of respect is truly appalling.
I certainly don’t care if this site is overrun by those which shall remain nameless, bots or spam. It’s what the management deserves now.
And even though Mods are volunteers who aren’t paid - they still work for HobsonCC. Frankly, I’m surprised they haven’t resigned en masse.
I haven’t been on in days - but came to check in on the tennis thread and read this thread.
Now I have a headache from the eye strain.
If the goal of the “fresh” look was to attract younger visitors I can say that it didn’t work with my teens (S & D). Both have been on CC off and on in the past year to check recent posts on schools they’re considering for college themselves. They accessed the site during the past week and separately reported to me that I should take a look at the “Yuck” (D’s word choice) re-do of CC’s platform. They won’t be back ?. They don’t like the appearance (all the white space, pale font, etc.) and they can’t find things. D searched a college name in forums, by date, and none of the threads that appeared had any mention of the school she was searching for. (This search strategy had always worked in the past.)
Teens/young adults are less and less on their computers. They are on their handhelds (phone, tablet, etc). And this site is simply terrible on the handhelds. This is going to drive away both audiences- the old timers AND the young kids.
@MaineLonghorn Just confirming which thread did you unfeature? There’s some that I kept featured (class 2023, 2024 etc)
Exactly, @emilybee. Thank you for staying it so clearly. I think TPTB are making a difficult job more difficult than it needs to be for the moderators.
@lookingforward. I have done what I call end user experience for multiple companies. I am doing one for a French company in a few weeks. It’s fun but there is where I learned that software people don’t really use their own software and don’t understand things like where buttons should be and how to make things easy.
I can figure out most software within a few minutes but trust me this was not that easy ?. But once I find a way to do something then I stick to it.
The whole site is like an organizational mess. Very little logic attached to it. I personally think using this on a Mobile is much easier then on the computer. The computer is like a nightmare for someone with ADHD or any organizational issues as I mentioned before.
Some practical questions:
- What do the star and checkmark at the bottom of a thread title indicate?
- How does one see who agrees/likes a post? When I click on it, it is transparent, so unreadable, and only remains for a fraction of a second.
-
If you hover your cursor on a laptop/computer over the star it says “featured” and over the checkmark it says “participated”.
-
For me, on a laptop, if I hover over the agree/like/helpful, it shows me a list, just like the old version.
No hover on my mobile.
@doschicos , thanks. For me, every thread I have posted in has the star and checkmark. So I don’t understand the difference between the star (for featured) and the checkmark (for participation). No other thread has only the star colored in. To me it seems the star and checkmark work in tandem. Anyone else seeing it the same? Or differently?
So on my iPad I can’t see the agree or like posters. Is that the same for anyone else who uses an iPad?
I’m not going to whip out my dinosaur of a laptop just to see the posters who agree, but I sure miss that feature. ?
I was unable to uncheck some bookmarks today. I was on mobile when attempting. FYI
Fly, I also noticed every bookmarked post I’ve commented on has the star. Threads I just bm’d to follow do not. But on Latest, lots don’t have the star.
So I agree it’s confusing.
In addition to all the pragmatic things that do not work about the new site, I have to say that the Parents Forum/Parent Cafe always did a remarkable job of feeling like an engaged, thoughtful community. Of course, a site has to generate hits and money, but that felt like a backdrop to something helpful, fun and meaningful. Now, the need to feed the beast feels primary.; participants (including the devoted mods) somewhere way past tertiary. Yet another reason to decrease participation, which is already in a downward spiral. Everyone who shared their ideas, tried to help, and made a difference is appreciated and will be missed.
Something’s going on. Now about half the posts I read are in that huge font and the other half are in regular font. For a while they were all in regular.
Me too! Some larger font…some smaller
I’ve been trying to hover over my mobile devices, but I keep falling on the floor. ?
