Our Fresh New Look Is Here

Ya know, I was going to say that I wonder if there’s some sort of pay-to-play going on. Tufts is well known not to play and not to jump through hoops for ratings. But I didn’t want to come across as a conspiracy theorist.

Why not? Everyone else is. GD&R

Is it my imagination or is the line spacing recently decreased?

Now for font and navigation. Nothing like working backwards.

And the post date goes up top.

Hmm…just checking the line spacing when I type a response. It sure looks the same on my iPad. Double space while I’m typing…

But single when I hit the post comment button.

Very weird.

@skieurope, I think everybody here really appreciates all of your efforts on behalf of the forums and the participants. It is obvious you are in a difficult position, as people have no one else to complain to but you aren’t in a position to do anything directly to address the complaints. It has been kind of a spectacular misfire, but we’ll all just have to see how things work out over time. Hope you can put your feet up a little over the weekend.

Well I, for one, like the font. What can I say? It is a little widely-spaced and the size hinders what you see on the page, but there is a cleanness to it. Am I the only one who added a positive? ? I think so…

I was more curious about the fact that CC has to wait in line behind other clients to fix problems. How big is the company that they can’t do follow up on a re-launch? Isn’t that normally included in the contract?

Looking at the priorities for the relaunch, functionality seems like it is low on the list. It states that they would conduct user research. I wonder which users provided input.

Under Branding Challenge, what are “personas and user pain points”?

Website Design Translation:
Simplify navigation => eliminate navigation options
Expand content offering => direct users to sponsored or useless articles
Improve search functionality => not sure how this was done but note that it doesn’t refer to overall functionality, just search functionality.
Overall user experience => catch all phrase that basically didn’t happen.

More than anything else, I think it is interesting that this is a group that has worked on Roadtrip Nation’s website for years. They seem like design/branding people without experience in interactive websites. Maybe I’m missing it.

I tried to edit the above post but received this

I was going to add that I didn’t see any mention about creating a uniform website on different platforms on their list.

Where is that big long quote from?

Thanks!

The new format makes CC appear insignificant & boring.

@CCadmin_Sorin I’m not sure if this is a glitch or if it is intentional. With the new update, if I go to Home then Colleges and Universities and click on Alphabetical List, I get the large list of all schools. I can’t click on C to take me to just the schools that start with C (ie. UCs) and it doesn’t show me which schools have had recent posts. However, if I go to Home then Colleges and Universities and click on the title of Colleges and Universities then I can choose the letter C and get a vertical list of all of the C colleges which shows me when the most recent post was for each school. Then I can scroll past the schools which haven’t had a post since the last time I logged on. I think this can easily be fixed if you hyperlink each letter in the alphabetical listing to take the user to the long vertical list. Some who are only interested in one school might not want the long vertical list but when one regularly looks at the UCs or the CSUs, the long vertical list is helpful.

@lkg4answers Excellent research!

I think a lot of oldtimer parent posters have reached the “pain point,” whatever that is supposed to mean for the website developers. Do they want to make things easier for the “personas” or more difficult? Seems like they want to make things more difficult for the ultimate goal of getting us to go elsewhere.

I think they missed the mark with any “user research” done. If they actually did it, they need to replace the UX researcher. Just saying . . .

I just sent this message to Mark Wronski

I’m not sure if you have been made aware of the INCREDIBLE level of frustration and anger that the badly designed remake of College Confidential has generated among the long time, extremely knowledgeable and valuable posters, who are the REASON that CC has the great reputation it has in the education world.
If not, I suggest you read every page of this thread,
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/community-forum-issues/2148512-our-fresh-new-look-is-here-p109.html

And after doing so, make it EASIER, not HARDER for us to find threads, read them, in order to better help students and parents !

Just testing…
** bolding **
let’s see if the following might work:
seeing if we can change to arial or another font with this?
or this one:
can we change the font size this way??

I edited this about 6 times to try different combinations and so far no go with getting a new font or font size but maybe someone with more html experience can have a go on this front.

ps on my previous comment - I’m actually fine now with site navigation - before the update I mostly went to the ‘latest posts’ and I’m still doing that now. My biggest issue still is the huge font size and large amount of wasted space on the page meaning I have to scroll so much. I have recurring tendinitis in my right middle finger and it’s flaring up again. I’m sure the increased scrolling on this site and another site that weirdly had a similar update to this one around the same time are a big part of it. (I use a trackpad on my laptop).

Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, this site is very popular and will continue to be the site of choice as the number of college applications continue to rise.

Old timers may leave but there undoubtedly will be many new members (students and parents) added who only know the new site and will contribute readily.

People hate change but I have a gut feeling that this site will continue to flourish and will be around 10+ years from now no matter how much bitchin and complaining is done by a small, yet vocal minority.

Font size was disabled years ago, and AFAIK, font type was never enabled.
