and I was wondering what that means, inasmuch as people just admitted this year are talking about merit scholarships from Chicago. Are there separately administered merit scholarships? Will there be next year? How does this all work?

Congratulations to those of you admitted this year, and best wishes to those of you still awaiting good news from some of the colleges you applied to.

My understanding is that the College Honor Scholarships and the University Scholarships (the available U of C merit scholarships) are administered by the Office of Admissions, not the College Aid Office.

My daughter is a senior (fourth-year, as Chicago calls them) and she was fortunate to receive one of the full-tuition merit scholarships. My understanding is that the admissions counselors make recommendations to a scholarship committee, which then decides who receives merit scholarships. I believe there are 30 full-tuition scholarships and then more 1/2-tuition.

tokenadult,
Rondafaye has the same info I do -- admissions handles the merit money. No separate interviews, and everyone who checks the box on the app is considered. The numbers I've hear are 20-30 full tuition, 100 1/3 tuition. It's genuine merit $$.

From Ohio, Son received University Scholarship $10,000. ;-(
I think Chicago is out of reach. If you are waitlisted, I'm pretty sure a spot will open up.

D received a 10,000/year scholarship in the mail today from UChicago - wow - so much less work than some schools that may you write a zillion essays for a scholarship.

Here's a question for U Chcago experts - does this school award any money to national merit finalists - seems as if I heard they do. If so, I wonder if there's time to change U Chicago to her first choice.

Yes, Chicago gives a nominal NMF scholarship - it's $1,000 or $2,000 - I can't remember exactly. There is still time to change your number one college pick for NMF.

haven't received my letter of admission yet... anyone know if merit offers come in a different letter, or do they come with the normal admissions packet?

Son just received in the mail a big envelope with the University Scholarhip $10,000/year! Didn't expect that. It's still way expensive to go there.
