Our society/economy and STEM fields

Hey guys!

Im a student of mechanical engineering(3rd year) and hopefully will have my bachelors next spring. Why im writing this? Well you see, I live in a post-communistic country and I am really starting to get sick of what is happening over here, so I wanna compare. Communism started here after war and it really got under the skin, people had to live like robots, everything according to what the "upper power" said and also everyone was paid the same wage, a doctor had the same money as a factory worker etc.. Now after communism fell, everyone just started studying economics, law because everyone thaught that it brings money.. and in fact it does. The situation today is that we have tons of companies coming to our school and everyone is just telling us how mechanical/electrical engineers are soooooo needed and that they get great pay, hell no. You have to study your ass of and then a business degree dude who partied hes degree out is your boss.. I mean is this normal? Does it happen in other countries as well? I really like engineering, I feel the need to know something more and to know how the world works, but I am really considering going into Law after my bachelors, because in this country only money is important. No one cares if your a great scientist, doctor(they get paid extremely badly $25-30k) or an engineer, the best thing is to know how law works and to know how to cheet people. This is the result of communism that made people really greedy, but also because capitalism is so into money these days, that the effort really doesnt count. Im sorry for my average english, I just wanted to write this and maybe know, what is your situation like, thanks :)

How much do you want to earn?
How much can you realistically expect to earn with your degree?

You will need to adjust your plans and/or your expectations until the difference between those two figures is zero.

I wonder if you could get a student work visa and become a citizen here, and then make some real money. Get the hell out of that communist country if you can.

You’re probably not going to get anyone here specifically knowledgeable about your country, especially since you haven’t even stated what country that it. That said, it seems like a no brainer. If your primary concern is money and you’re very confident that you’ll make more in law or business or something else, why are you studying MechE?
