Anyone going to Out and About on Monday, March 7?

I am not sure if they did this last year, or maybe it went right past us, but I’d say to go if you have the time. Looks like they will cover a lot of info that will help make Orientation less overwhelming. And your daughter will likely have a good time going to classes, etc.

We did a similar program at another university and my daughter had a great time. Ironically it helped make her feel more comfortable about UGA as well since this was another similar sized state university. Originally she was unsure about going to a large school. She has found her place at UGA and loves it. Let me know if you have any questions.

We’ve been on a campus tour and did Explore Georgia back in the summer. I guess I will see how much different this is than the other programs.

gamomof3- are you talking about the ga day for students with scholarships. we are going tp that on monday.

@gasenioryear - yes that’s it. We will be there.

I’m sure they will talk about CURO Scholarship opportunities, but if not addressed directly be sure to ask for specifics. We learned that there are considerable opportunities and funding available by application to non-Foundation Fellow students (I guess the premise is that FFs have these already built-in). Some of the host students mentioned that there are upcoming CURO deadlines for first years.

GAMOMOF3- DO YOU HAVE A S OR D? i HAVE A S. MAYBE WE CAN SOMEHOW MEET?

Did not check CC until this morning. I will PM my cell.

Looks like we can’t go to either event (or at least our son can’t). Can someone please fill us in and also would it be worth a parent going alone? (probably not)

It was a good event for the students since they get to actually attend a class. The information that was in the parent session can probably be found on the department website. There departments that presented were financial aid, housing and career development. Most of the information they presented can probably be found on the department website. The did a tour of North Campus for the parents but if you can do that at another time, I wouldn’t go to this just for that.

Thanks!!!

gasenioryear - great meeting you yesterday IRL. What did your S think of the day? My D had a great time in Stat class…she knew what they were teaching and could answer some of the questions. Of course we had to make a trip to the bookstore to by more UGA stuff before leaving. She is definitely sold on UGA…the bookstore clerk asked where else was she considering and she said “No where, I’m coming here.” Guess I need to go ahead and do my commitment deposit.

gamomof3: Glad you guys had a good time. Attending classes is a good thing for the students. I love North Campus. Funny about the bookstore/apparel. Even though my daughter loves it there, she has been slow to acquire logo apparel. But she is that way with all of her wardrobe.

Yep, go ahead and pay the deposit now. That will spread out the pain of the payments. It is kind of sad that the Hope benefits have been cut. The fees aren’t cheap. It will be interesting to see where the Hope funds stand next year and if they make timely changes to funding.

Never knew this program existed, but I saw a lot of people around yesterday. I had a few people sitting in my speech class. Was this for just honors kids or any freshman?

I’m almost graduating, and I think I own two UGA shirts - my freshman orientation shirt, and one other shirt that I bought. Never got around to paying more money for more shirts…

@jenmarie - It was a program for students who had received scholarship offers. I think most were honors but not all because my D decided she didn’t want to do honors.
She has enough free t-shirts already so we are not buying any more t-shirts. She got a pair of running shorts and one of those plastic tumblers that comes with the straw.

Speaking of free shirts-when we got home Monday, she got a UGA Class of 2015 t-shirt in the mail.

Congrats. to everyone who is committing to Georgia! Great choice! :D

It’s looking more and more like Gov. Deal’s HOPE proposal will be codified before next Fall. This means UGA students will pay an additional $1,866 in mandatory fees that will no longer be covered by HOPE. Currently, I think we’re paying about $500 per year in fees. In any case, HOPE still makes UGA or any other state school a great option.

That sounds promising. Believe me, I do think it is a great deal for instate students. The bill from the bursar’s office is hard to break down as to exactly which fees are covered by Hope.

If you take the total bill for one semester and subtract out your housing, meal plan, and tuition; I get $248 left over. The difference between the current Hope payment and just tuition is $585. let me know if you think the amount is different. :)

We were at Out and About on March 7th - my D had a great time - smart to place her with one girl for 3 hours and another for 2 - she loved the class and actually wanted to correct the TA with the equation - UGA was wonderful and I can’t wait to hear what she decides or choses!

@Starfish - glad you daughter enjoyed her visit too. Hopefully she will decide to join the UGA class of 2015.

Goooooooo Dawgs - Sic 'em!
