OUT of ivy

just curious.. has anyone here transferred out of an ivy league school? if so, why? are you happy with your choice?

My son is probably going to transfer out of an Ivy. He finds his school too pre-professional, lacking in intellectualism and very frat-oriented. The party life has been intense and distracting. Some of his reasons are unique to him, but it he thinks it is a waste of money (at least freshman year was). He thinks most of the kids there only care about the degree and not the education.

jeez, so many transfers out of cornell

oh and penn, too

I've applied to transfer out of any Ivy--and go to another one.

from where to where?

Columbia U to Harvard I would guess..

chanchito's location is now Columbia U. so they obviously go there now

uh yes, that was the 99% basis of my guess. :)

It's hard to keep young ppl in a small village, like Ithaca city, for 4 yrs...:)

Which ivies are quite frat-oriented? I assume Cornell and Penn?

Yea, same here foxdie. I posted before I saw yours but then realized my comment looked idiotic after yours lol. Tried to delete it, but there's no such option.

lol, don't you hate when that happens!

Is it worth to transfer from a state school to an ivy league school when you already have 90 credits at the state school and the ivy league school only accepts 60.. (youd lose 30)
i also heard that usually ivy league schools have grade inflation... they are hard to get into so you dont have to work as much once you are in... and graduate/med/dental schools know this - so your GPA is looked as better to graduate from a non-ivy league school (heard this from a Columbia student)
would you make the transfer to an ivy league school and lose an entire year? or would you just finish up at your current average state school?
(money is not an issue here - lets say they both schools are the same price)

@ sexy123

Don't just let one person who has attended an ivy dictate your perceptions, especially in terms of graduate school.

If you look at the top graduate schools - and look at where the students have graduated from, you will see that the Ivys dominate. I think that speaks for itself.

Sure, there is grade inflation, but thats because the level of competition and the ability of students are higher than other universities. What do you think weighs more? a 3.5 GPA from an Ivy or a 3.5 GPA from average universities?

i think you know the answer.

so u think its worth the transfer? even if i lose 30 credits and friends and stuff...
wont graudate schools say that i was only interested in transferring there so i can get a "prestigious" degree.. will it look better to transfer?
i am having mixed feelings...

As someone who is transfering next fall, I can tell you that the decision is much more difficult once you actually get an acceptance letter and realize you'll be leaving your life at your current college behind. You better have damn good reasons for leaving-both to get into the school you're applying to, and to make it easier on you for the transition. I personally think that the prestigious name isnt a good enough reason to transfer-no matter what people say, grades at ivy schools are not easy, and you may even be better off kicking ass at your school than having a weird transition and possibly getting a low GPA at an ivy. Additionally, if you're thinking of working anywhere other than a large corporation that only looks quickly at the name of the school on the top of your resume, they'll eventually know that you decided to transfer late in the game, and maybe assume that it was only for the name.
You may want to apply just to see if you can get in-then if HYP all come knocking at your door, think about it some more.
Good luck.

see, that's why you should go to Duke

i got accepted...
but at least ill have an IVY league diploma... no?
isnt that MUCH better than a STATE school diploma.......
what are some good reasons to leave? what are UR reasons, imissboston?

where did you get accepted to?
