Out of State Admissions?

<p>I went on a tour during spring break and absolutely loved it. Definitely going to apply EA.</p>

<p>But in the admissions meeting, they mentioned that 1/3 of the spots are available for 2/3 of the applicants to UVa (OOS applicants). I'd imagine that giving most of the spots to virginia applicants lowers the overall average test scores, gpa etc. I exceed the average admitted SAT scores for UVa, but I don't know how to judge my competitiveness as an applicant as an out of state-er.</p>

<p>So what I was wondering is how much harder is it for an OOS applicant to get in? </p>

<p>Does anyone have data for the accepted OOS applicants, as far as test scores?</p>

<p>UVa doesn’t publish OOS stats separate from the IS like others (ex: UNC). The school took 22% of all OOS applicants this year if I’m not mistaken. Like all top 25 schools, there is no guarantee regardless of how impressive your profile might be; consequently, I’d encourage you to apply but make certain to have some solid match and safeties on your list as well.</p>

<p>I’m applying as an OOS transfer to econ.</p>

<p>I’m currently praying to all of the gods of all of the religions that I get in.</p>

<p>UVA took 22% of OOS applicants this year. That number, though, includes OOS legacy applicants who get a break on admissions at UVA. So if you are a non-legacy OOS applicant, the acceptance rate will be even less than that. Although UVA doesn’t break down the GPA/SAT sats for OOS, you should expect that the stats would be similar to other comparable schools with a 20-ish % acceptance rate. A friend’s kid recently got into Michigan (OOS), Emory, Tufts and w-listed at Vandy. Rejected OOS EA at UVA. </p>

<p>One more thing. UVA doesn’t focus primarily on the standardized test scores. They focus on the transcript (which is different than the GPA). They really want to see the applicant taking the hardest classes offered at their high school and then doing well in those classes. If you don’t have that, very strong test scores will not help that much.</p>

<p>@northwesty, I’ve taken one of the more rigorous schedules offered at the school and only have 1 B+ (freshman year). I think my transcript is far better than my test scores anyways…</p>

<p>cubanochico, I was accepted OOS as a white male non-legacy with no hooks of any kind. I had a 2270 SAT, 33 ACT, and a 4.0 unweighted GPA. However, I know valedictorians and very impressive kids at other schools that didn’t get accepted as well as kids with less impressive stats that did. There’s really just no way to know, but I assume EA will help your chances.</p>
