Out of state admitted?

How does UCLA's premed compare to UWash?

i have heard that UCLA has a roughly 60% marticulation rate on this forum somewhere but i dont have any actual sources to confirm that, so im not sure. and do you mean WashU (in St. Lious)? if so, WashU certainly has a better premed (althought im not sure what their marticulation rate is). if you're talking about University of washington or something, then i dunno.

Yeah I'm pretty sure WashU at St. Louis has much better pre-med...if a good pre-med program is all you want in a college, I'd say go WashU, johns hopkins, or some others like taht.

tuke:

can't comment on UT, but I can assure you that the UC's are EXTREMELY competitive for premed, bordering on cut-throat....

I am from Washington State. I got accepted to both UW and UCLA (letter and science for microbiology). I got in with a 580 on my English SAT but a 800 on the Math SAT. Is that amazing?
I really want to know how many of those admitted (about 9,000) are actually from out of state? Thank you.

I'm from WA state too and I got accepted to UW and UCLA. 2090 SAT, 720 MathII, 580 Bio M. Certainly not too spectacular, but I think my essays did a lot for me.

You planning on going there NickZhao? What part of WA are you from and what high school do you go to?

on another thread, the admittance rate of OOS students is said to be 21%

heres a link for 2005 stats: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr/Frosh_Prof05.htm

what do you mean extremely competitive for pre-med? like to get into the pre-med departments or what?

he means to get into med school as a premed student at UCLA is competitive (which is generally true for most large, public universities). note that there is no such thing as a "pre-med department". premed is just prequisite classes you take in order to fulfill the requirements to be considered an applicant of medical school. anyone can be a premed.

bluebayou, i suppose you're right - the costs do somewhat outweigh the benefits. i am still trying to find out more about premed at UT, but to no avail. its like the information doesnt exist, lol.

oh i see... it makes sense that getting into med school from private universities would not be as hard as coming from a large public university like ucla. but doesn't ucla have strong pre-med majors in general?

do some more reading in the premed area of the CC forums. its quite useful. but to sum it up, its not the majors that matter, but how well the student performs grade-wise, volunteering, research opportunities, rec letters, and so forth. and of course, with a larger university, comes greater competition in trying to get a hold of these opportunities, which is why bluebayou notes that UCLA has a competitive "premed program"

I go to Gig Harbor High School in Gig Harbor Washington. And you?

You're right-there is no premed major- my floormate's an International Development Studies major and he's premed too.

And y'all might like to know that UCLA Medical doesn't favor its own undergrads during admissions

i didnt get in but if i did i would be more than happy to pay the out of state tuition, however- for that price i can probably get more

I went to Skyline High School in Issaquah, Wa. I also did Running Start.

i'm from texas and i'm really stoked about getting in. i've wanted to go to cal or ucla for as long as i can remember. i do not have a very good opinion of UT. it is large (even larger than UCLA), and since a huge chunk of my school ends up matriculating there, it feels a bit like a bubble. i've also heard its super hard to get into med school from UT. at the moment, my preliminary financial aid reprot is looking reasonable i guess. my family is expected to pay around 30k a year total. it's a huge chunk of change, no doubt, but it's not including loan options and at least i got about a 4th of the costs shaved off.

got new for you, Alin. Cal and UCLA are cut-throat environments....the number that start out premed and actually apply to med school (after runnig the premed gauntlet) is miniscule. Both schools grade on a C+ curve...

i have absolutely no intention of going to med school. just making a comment to people from texas. i'm guessing it is pretty hard at any large prestigious public school if you are doing premed.

Got nothing in the financial package, 30K EFC and the rest in parent loans. Its going to cost double what UMCP costs.

Is it worth it?

Is it too late to apply for loans? How would I go about doing this? Sorry, I'm really new at this, haha.
