Out of State Applicants/Students

What states are you guys from? Why did you apply/attend Berkeley?

I'm from Tampa, FL...

Why? God knows... heh... I'd have to think about that. My biggest factor is probably the environment that Cal is placed in... it's very urban, but extremely to close to (imo) some of the most beautiful landscape in the world. It's close to my brothers and sisters (who live in SoCal) but faaaar from my parents (always a plus).

I visited on my 17th birthday and have felt a connection ever since, heh. I love it. :-) The campus and people impressed me far more than any other campus, and the academic reputation is pretty amazing...

Thats exactly why I am going to Cal. I spent six weeks out there this past summer and was extremely impressed. I had been planning on going to Boston for college but I went to Cal for the summer session program and I just was amazed with the professors and the campus. It was the most beautiful campus I had seen and I had been to all the colleges in Boston and Florida. The weather was also great- especially compared to Boston. I knew Cal was good but I really didn't know just how good it really is. Also there's just so much to do there and places you can go within a few hours drive, especially compared to Gainesville. Zacsrequiem your going from one Bay area to another.

Yeah, from one of America's most famous bays to the other... which is cool. I love the water...

I've been making pilgrimages to CA for years, so I figured I would take the plunge and enroll. I think the additional cost is worth it considering the higher quality of education and fantastic setting. I'm not sure if in-state students realize how special the area really is.

And annnnything is better than Gainesville. I'm assuming you are from S. FL.?

Yea, I'm from South Florida, Pompano Beach to be exact. I went to Gainseville to check it out and it was so depressed, especially after just leaving Berk. Granted the weather that day wasn't very nice I still felt like I needed a prozac or two after leaving the Gainsville city limits....I'm a city person and Gainseville is just to rural and country bumpkin for my liking

Its so damn annoying.....My neighbor just asked me where I am going to school I said probably Berkeley......he goes thats a great school didn't you get into Florida...I said ya....and he said well thats a great school too, I said ya..he said thats a tough decision Florida and Berkeley are pretty much equal Florida might be better in alot of areas too. I said ya UF's good...I did tell him some of Berkeley rankings such as the number one public school........its just annoys me first that he felt it necessary to say but am I the only one who thinks thats a bunch of BS.....is there any comparison between UF and berkeley.....Sakky, although I find you more negative about Berkeley, you do know your stuff can you chime in maybe. Also is it true that San Francisco is "colder" than boston in the winter or just that certify my neighbor to be a complete idiot. Sry for rambling I'm just annoyed.

UF really doesn't stand up well in comparison to Berkeley. People respect UF here in FL, but the people in education don't consider them equals.

I don't know enough about UF to really comment on it, but I'd be very surprised if anyone in the know (or anyone outside of Florida) thought it was even in the same league as Berkeley. As for SF being colder than Boston in the winter, that is absolute garbage. The east coast has extremely cold winters and the bay area is very mild year round. Your neighbor doesn't seem like the best person to ask advice from.
