A couple questions about the UC application for an out-of-state student:
For honors courses, do I mark them as “Not Honors” when applying, or can I mark them as “HL” (UC-accredited honors)? There’s no in-between. I know the UC GPA doesn’t count school-designated honors courses as weighted for out-of-state, but if I mark it as NH they will still recognize that is an honors class, right?
Also, I was trying to enter Honors Precalculus and it is not an option for Math classes. Should I enter it as “Mathematics I”, “Math II”, “Math III”, or “Advanced Mathematics”? Those are the only vague possibilities under the Math classes. I think Advanced Math means like Linear Algebra or something, though, because in the order it comes after Calculus. I have no idea what Math I/II/III could be referring to, though.
Thanks!
Also, should I list Health (is that an academic course)? What about Business & Personal Law, is that academic?
Don’t list health, it says on the application they don’t want health classes listed. I’m not sure about business, if it shows an interest (like if you want to be a business major) you can at least put it in the “course work other than a-g” tab. As for honors, I find that confusing too, namely because of this: http://i.imgur.com/c5d1RAf.png (link to an image showing two FAQ answers). The first one says enter honors as designated by YOUR high school, while the second one says UC approved and Cal only. As for Pre-Calc I put it in as Algebra II/Trigonometry because its mostly trig, but im not sure if thats correct…
Alternatively, you can list them under Coursework Other Than A–G.
Berkeley is very expensive for an OOS student. If you were to get in, could you afford $55K+ per year?
@StevenToCollege @Aevios Thanks! I don’t know why it’s so complicated…
@“aunt bea” Why does it seem like anytime a person wants to go OOS there are people hounding them about how much money it is? That’s not even relevant to this thread!
It is relevant because. . . It is a LOT of work applying to the UCs if you can’t go because of money; we’ve had lots of students, come acceptance time, wonder why they weren’t given financial aid as OOS students.
If they are admitted, they wonder how they can get instate residency because the state won’t give them a dime towards the costs of $55k per year for OOS students.
OOS honors courses for OOS applicants aren’t considered “Honors” courses by the UCs. You can only list APs as UC approved. They won’t recognize OOS honors courses or give them additional weight because you are not instate. So, instate students are the only ones who can lists honors courses as honors-advantage only for instate tax paying residents.

@itsmyusername I went and did some research and supposedly out of state students should enter their honors level courses as honors so that UC sees that you took hard classes, but the algorithm they use for calculating your UC GPA won’t count them as honors because your application indicated you as an out of state student. Also, most people have apparently been putting precalc in under “advanced mathematics”
@“aunt bea” I think their complaint is that they weren’t asking about financial aid in this thread. If they are applying, then they have probably already thought about cost and get tired of hearing about it as an out of state student.
