Out-of-State at UT Austin?

I'm a senior in New Mexico and UT Austin is my top choice school right now, but I've heard that it's much more selective for out-of-state students. Is this true? If so, how much of a difference is there?
I know the student body is only about 7% non-texan...

Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you!

You are going to get in. Just apply early and do good on your essays

What major are you looking into also what’s your race. Being female helps you. You can get into texas a&m auto admission

Your test scores are in the higher % because of your high sat/act test scores. Also your second major should be liberal arts ok just to be safe since it’s really easy to get into.

@135pipe‌ thanks for the response! I’m thinking of majoring in economics, which falls under the liberal arts category at UT.

I was considering applying to the plan II honors program as well. Does anyone know how competitive that program is?

If that’s the case then you will definitely get in then but honors programs are really competitive just raise that act to like 32 or 33 and you will get into plan 2 but have a backup plan because ut costs in total 50k for oos students

Plan II is a fabulous program, and admission is very competitive. You look like a good candidate – best of luck!

Thanks @yaupon ! Are you familiar with the Plan II application process?

@anxious42015, my knowledge of Plan II is based on knowing two graduates and four current Plan II students, but my D did not apply (she was dammed and determined to go out of state). The Plan II kids we know are Eagle Scouts, Coca-Cola Scholarship semifinalists, vals/sals, Duke TIP participants, Presidential Gold Medal recipients for community service, and in addition to their academic and extracurricular strengths are also engaging and intellectually curious people. All of them had Ivy or top 20 college acceptances but chose Plan II because of the program’s opportunities and the excellent value (one student plans to go to med school, and another to law school, so they wanted to minimize undergraduate debt). They were all in-state, though. I assume that the UT website would have stats on in-state v. out-of-state applicants.

You will be competitive, but ignore anyone that tells you it is easy to get into UT from out of state. The overall admissions rate is high because of the in-state rules. For out of state UT is nearly the same as trying to get into the Ivies.

UT is a great school, and the stats quoted above would indicate that UT is (obviously) significantly harder to get into out of state than in-state, but except for a few programs, UT is still far, far easier than getting into Ivy league schools (which have got truly insanely competitive). Approximately two dozen colleges including all the Ivies, Rice, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Olin and various LAC have 75% (!) or more of their enrolled students above the average ACT score for out of state admitted to UT.

Typical test scores for UT out of state quoted above imply that average (median) for those getting in is top 4 or 5% for the accepted students, where the Ivies’ median is top 1% test scores for enrolled students.
