Out-of-state chances for UC-Berkeley

Hi all,

This is a specific question about one school, because it's an out-of-state university and pretty selective, so I don't have a good idea of what they are looking for. I'm from Connecticut.

GPA: Hovers between 3.6-3.8 unweighted. This is with mostly honors classes 9th and 10th grades, and 4 AP's (US History, English, Bio, and Calc AB) 11th grade. I'm taking five this year, my senior year.

SAT's: 800 Math, 800 Writing, 730 Verbal

SAT II's: 750 Us History, 590 Bio, 690 Math II

EC: I do a lot of music, playing/recording, and am definitely considering sending the school a CD along with my application. I hold some leadership positions in several clubs, like the school lit mag, Model U.N., and a local community needs group. I've won awards for my writing and won the Voice of Democracy essay contest for the state of CT. I've also done other stuff, like teach classes at the Young Writer's Conference.

I think I may have a shot at the school, but again, I'm not sure out they treat out-of-state apps. Any advice/comments would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I would say that Berkeley is a slight reach for you because your GPA is a bit too low. Do you know what your UC GPA is? And btw, UCs dont count freshman year grades.

check out your uc gpa. if its above a 4.0 you have a good shot but its a bit of a reach. but i hope you still apply. your personal statement is key! im an entering freshman at ucla! i didnt like cal as much as i thought so look into ucla its just as good if not better!

With your scores you have a shot although it's much harder for OOS students to get in. Keep in mind, however, that it's hard to graduate in just 4 years, and at $40K a year with little financial aid for OOS students, many think it's not worth it.

There's plenty of financial aid if you know where to get it. Lots of my friends are from out of state, and they like it here.

Bubbles, can you tell us the sources for OOS financial aid at UCs?

i think you have a good shot at the basics....

the test scores you posted were great, and your ap scores may help you...
your gpa may sound a little low, but there are many variables involved... if your class rank is high, that will show that your high school had tough grading... if you had a B in a course with a 5 on the AP tests, that also reflects nicely on your gpa

i think almost any college would rather accept you than a 4.0 student because of your GREAT extra curriculars... your academics meet the minimum, and that's all a college wants when you can make up for with what you could add to their college...

you also sound like you have the makings for some nice college essays...

i think you have a great shot anywhere you could apply...

Hello, fellow Nutmegger! :)

Only 9% of Berkeley students are from out-of-state. However, a little over 20% of out-of-state applicants get in, which is only a tiny bit lower than the in-state admit rate. The thing to keep in mind about those students is that they typically have something "special" to offer, like athletics, and I'm not sure that's the case for you.

If it's your dream school, however, why not apply? The worst that can happen is you don't get in, and it's not like you're expecting to, anyway. I say go for it. :)
