does michigan give a lot of need-based financial aid

actually, out of state, i'd say your chances arent too good... a 1240 SAT is definitely on the low side for out of staters at u of m.... but apply anyway....you just never know! i'd say umich is a reach for you.

great SAT, but that GPA is just not gonna work. I don't think your chances are good, even if you were in state. a high SAT and low GPA shows laziness, unless you took insanely hard classes or go to a realllly good school.

your girlfriend was extremely lucky! what kind of hook or ECs did she have?

Intotherain, I would say Michigan is certainly worth applying to for Chemistry. The program has many resources, good professors, smart students etc...

A 3.35 "Michigan GPA" will hurt you. However, you have a solid ACT score. Your chances are decent but not great. I would say Michigan is a match. It is no secret. Michigan de-emphasizes standarized test scores in favor of good and steady GPAs. A 3.8+ student with a 26 on the ACT stands a better chance of getting into Michigan than a 3.3 student with a 32 on the ACT and neither has a good chance.

At Michigan, successful engineering applicants usually have slightly higher credentials (mean "Michigan GPA" around 3.9 and mean ACT around 30), but the acceptance rate into the college of Engineering is also inexplicably high (typically over 70%).

what about out of state (al, female, white) for the LSA college?

I have a 4.2 weighted, 3.7 un
690 V 570 M 640 W 1900 altogether...
8 APs altogether
63 out of 469 (top 13 percent)
officer 2 clubs, NHS, Span HS, job 2 years, spanish tutor, big sister, church volunteer, soccer 12 years, 3 hs, 1 year captain....... and on

i am working on my math score and am taking the sat again this fall...

If you can raise your SAT M by 50+ points and keep your verbal scores the same, I would say your chances are decent. The better you do on your SAT, the better your chances. Try and get at least a 1300 on the two original sections of the SAT.
