Out of state credits

This has been asked a lot of times, but how do you know that the courses you take match UC Berkeley's courses? I know CCCs have ASSIST, and some courses like General Biology are obviously going to correspond with Bio 3A (well, hopefully), but if I take a course like Engineering Design, can that correspond with Engineering Design and Analysis?

The official UCB FAQ says that I can put this question in the 'comments' section of the application, but I was wondering if there was an earlier way to find out (since it'd be useless to take a class that doesn't transfer credits).

Also, does the 60 credit minimum only apply to transferable credit to classes in your major's requirements, or can they be any kind of transferable credit?

Thanks.

Teaman, I’m not an expert here but D recently went thru the transfer process to UC (not Berk) that included credits from an out of state (OOS) university. She had the same concern as you, wondering how her out of state courses would transfer. She was told by the admissions office of her intended UC that they would not do an advance transfer evaluation–she would have to go through the application process and the eval would be done at that time. She was admitted and will see in about a month how her courses actually transfer for credit when she sits down with her adviser.

One thing you MIGHT be able to do to see how your OOS engineering courses compare is to go onto the admissions/transfer website of your OOS U. Some universities have a mechanism for you to plug in courses from other universities to see if there is comparable credit to their courses. This is the reverse action, but it might be useful to to see what you get. Too bad UC doesn’t have that handy mechanism.

The 60 credits–they are not just for your major. Most of these will be gen ed, ideally with some courses that satisfy prerequisite requirements for your major. One thing to watch out for in the transfer to UC is the gen ed specific writing/critical thinking requirement as I don’t believe you can satisfy that with OOS courses (but you can do it at a Calif Comm College).
Best of luck!
