Out of state employment opportunities for Bama graduates

Is this kind of what you’re looking for in Birmingham?

Montegut, I sent you a PM. I didn’t want to post about another college option here in the UA forum.

I think you are getting two separate things confused. There’s the Technical and Engineering Career Fair held twice a year (in September and February) and run by the Career Center, and the co-op interview process held twice a year (in October and March) and run by the Cooperative Education Program. I believe all companies that are participating in the co-op process attend the career fair, but not all companies at the career fair participate in the co-op program.

It appears the Career Center website has taken down the list of companies that attended the fall career fairs, and it’s too early for them put a list of companies that will attend the spring fairs. But I had an email from the coop program director so I was able to pull this list of companies participating in the coop program.

Most of these companies are in Alabama or nearby states. Co-oping is different from doing an internship in that you commit to full calendar year of work at the company (broken up into three terms: a fall, a spring, and a summer) whereas an internship usually only last one summer. Also, keep in mind some companies are looking for specific majors.

feeno…thanks for the clarification. I was confused…my son never went to any of them because he has a summer internship on Redstone Arsenal.

The vast majority of internships with companies will be in the Southeast. If your son wants to have an internship outside the South his best bet would be to seek out research opportunities through programs such as REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates). REUs are available at almost every university in the US. The research covers any field you can think of.

If he is dead set on the biomedical field then he should go to UAB and major in biomedical engineering. Our school, as feeno, pointed out has a chemical engineering program that is geared toward traditional chemical engineering.
