Does UM give pretty good out of state aid or are they stingy with their money?

Not good...

How about...ANY out of state money? My parents only make 80k a year, I don't think they'd want to spend half of it on college.

Michigan gives significant need-based aid. They meet roughly 90% of demonstrated need. However, Michigan is not known for giving out too much merit aid. I guess that's in line with most other top universities, except Michigan is huge and cannot meet 100% of demonstrated aid.

What if you're considered in-state but you don't live in Michigan. Are they more lenient with you like regular in-staters? (admission-wise)

Hmmm...well I'm hoping with 80k a year that means I have some demonstrated need and I can knock off a little bit of that MONSTER tuition. What do you guys think?

I really want to say that 80K isn't exactly low income? I'm not too sure as that's not a topic that me and my friend's discuss... but isn't the national average like 40-45?

Alexandre, in my opinion, the definition of "need-based aid" leaves something to be desired. My parents' FAFSA showed less than $40K although they had saved a significant amount for things like college tuition and retirement. I received full Federal aid (not alot) but nothing from UM.

It's not that 80k is low, far from it...it's just that Michigan's costs would be a good HALF of my family's entire income. I would think most people without aid at Michigan are going to be making a LOT over the national average.
