I'm from Ohio...what are my chances of getting financial aid?

lol, we need to know how much your parents make/have.

posted in the wrong forum

um not sure what the right forum would be,
or how much my parents make.

all i’m asking is can i expect to get the same or comparable amount of aid from u of m as i would from private schools

No, you would get less from U of M.

OOS aid at the U of M is a myth, even for Maize and Blue loving Ohioans like us. It’s a sad fact of life.

My son is from CA and did not qualify for any financial aid but received quite a nice package with a combination of grants and scholarships. He is a double major in Engineering and Performing Arts, but none of the scholarships or grants were from the individual colleges within the college. They were all from the U of Michigan itself.

It may depend on your application, grades, test scores and strength of courses taken in HS. Don’t assume anything because you never know what will happen. Hang in there :)

What were your son’s statistics? That is a very unusual case.

Let’s see if I can remember. It was this time last year that he was doing the app.

SAT 2110
ACT 33
AP Physics 5
AP BIO 5
AP Calc 5
AP Chem 5
AP W HIST 4
AP ECON 5

I got about 6k of financial aid. My parents make 200,000 a year though, so I guess thats why. I’m also out of state.

Sorry, 10mwil- I posted in the wrong forum! Should have noted that. My mistake, not yours.

UMich does offer financial aid to OOS applicants- generally a combination of grants, loans and work study. They do not, however, meet the full need of OOS applicants. There are private schools that do not meet full need either so there is no guarantee you would get more aid from a private school. Michigan does offer a number of merit scholarships for the most competive candidates.

they give more aid than you think for OOS, especially if you are very poor like i was. THey generally meet 65% - 90% of OOS need.

What if your parents are divorced and the parent you live with only makes 30k? Am I guaranteed a massive portion of aid?

Having only 30k am I pretty much guaranteed a large sum from ANY college for that matter?
