Out of State FInancial Aid

How is Financial Aid for out of staters. I guess avergae package..?

financial aid is horrible and virtually nonexistant for OOSers

really that bad... so they make you pay full? that sucks..

Not really, Michigan is actually good but not great at giving aid to OOS students, especially need-based aid.

I was actually very satisfied with my package, OOS. In fact, it sort of suprised me because I heard they don't give a lot. Just apply for financial aid and see what happens to you. Of course, FA consists of loans, too, so remember that you have to pay those back after graduation. Alexandre said "especially need-based aid," but I would say that merit-based aid is nearly impossible to get for OOS.

It's not "virtually nonexistent" for nonresidents. The difference between resident and nonresident aid is that U-M doesn't meet the full demonstrated need of nonresidents. They meet some need, but not all.

We're out of state and were extremely surprised at the generous aid D was given to attend. We had heard all the stories...and thus were very surprised with the outcome...making it easy for D to attend.

need based isn't that bad. I had a very low EFc and my grant from Mihcigan was 15 grand. scholarships are very selective(check out the website cause there are some that you need to do separate apps for) , but there is one that meets full need for OOS(not sure how many get that). At orientation they told us that Michigan as a whole gives 800 scholarships a year to both IS and OOS. there is virtually no strictly merit based aid unless you apply to departmental ones.

"there is virtually no strictly merit based aid unless you apply to departmental ones."

Not true. LSA gives strictly merit based, nondepartment-related, scholarships to OOS students.

Sorry, you're right(but very very few) here's the website, by the way:
<a href="http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Types_of_Financial_Aid/Scholarships/Entering_Undergraduates/outof.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Types_of_Financial_Aid/Scholarships/Entering_Undergraduates/outof.asp</a></p>

Ok actually this website is better: <a href="http://www.lsa.umich.edu/lsa/students/scholarships/new/%5B/url%5D">http://www.lsa.umich.edu/lsa/students/scholarships/new/</a>
From what I counted, there are 70 LSA scholarships and 40 shipman scholarships (plus the bentley scholarship, didn't list a number). So basically that's 100 some offered.

There are more, but they aren't necessarily specified (the engineering college gives separate scholarships for example, as does the math department (which is in LSA) specifically.)

I think Michigan is fairly generous when it comes to out-of-state financial aid, they covered about 95% of my financial need for my freshman year, with a majority of the funds coming from grants.
