Out of State for Bus School

Hey guys,

I'm debating whether or not to apply to University of Texas - Austin in the business school. From what I've seen it looks like a good fit for me and am tempted to apply there, but have already applied to six schools. I've casually talked to a few people and they've said that the school is really tough to get into, and if there is really not much hope I don't think I'll apply, but what do you guys think (with a 1400 SAT score)? It would also be helpful if you could compare my chances to getting into to some of the other places I'm applying: UPenn (ED), NYU, Univ of Southern Cal, Univ of Mich Ann Arbor, and Ohio State.

Here are my stats:

Ethnicity: Asian
State: TN
GPA: 3.88 (unweighted) or 4.15 (weighted)
Rank: Top 5%
APs: Biology, English Lit, English Language, US History, Government, Economics, Calculus AB
AP Scores: English: 4 Bio : 4 US History : 4
SAT: 1890 (bad i know, but I've been getting 30 and 31s on the ACT practice test, which is about a 1400 equivalent and think I can get this score in Oct)
SAT II Bio: 700 SAT II US History : 680
Acheivements: Top Ten in International DECA competiton, 1st in state and region in DECA, Eagle Scout, Cofounder of first Red Cross Club in TN, NHS
Clubs: Varsity Tennis Team (1 - 2 years), City Area Red Cross YOuth Council (4 years), School Red Cross CLub (1 - 2 years) been VP and Prez, SGA (4 years), Spanish Club (2 years), Science Honor Society (1 year), Newspaper Entertainment Editor, Governor's School and other enrichment programs
Work: Movie theatre 3 months (30 hrs/week), Camp Counselor
Volunteer Hours: appx 200

Thanks alot, and when you're making you prediction please use the 1400 SAT score for your prediction. Thanks.

UT Business school is indeed hard to get into, and for you, you might put it on the same level as U Penn and U Mich. I'll go down the list and see what I can make of your options:

Ethnicity: this will hurt you, but U Texas is heavily focused on numbers.
State: Out of state hurts you, nothing you can do.
GPA: For U Texas, rank is more important, although this GPA is above average for McCombs I think.
Rank: Top 5% is not specific enough, to be safe for McCombs, I'd say you should be top 1-2%.
AP's: Good cholices, scores count though.
AP Scores: Decent scores, average for UT McCombs, good for UT.
SAT score: I'll give more details based on your future score, but 1890 is very low, so you need to study to bring it up. I'd recommend Barron's.
SAT II Bio: Average. US History: Bring this up to above 750 hopefully.
Achievements: I'm not familiar wtih DECA, but others seem decent. Your ECs as a whole are good, but not fantastic.

You need to bring that score up. Good luck!

Thanks for your input. So what chance (%) do you think I have with the 30 or 31 ACT score? Thanks.

If you bring your score up I think you have a good chance of being admitted to the university, but not necessarily to the business school. My son is a resident with good stats but goes to high school out of state, and we are not counting on an admission to the business school.

Thanks for your input Mom. Any other comments anyone? Thanks.
