Does being out of state help your chance of admissions or hurt it?! I keep getting contradicting information, thanks!
OOS only helps in 2 situations:
-
you pay full non-resident tuituon at public universities that are desperately needy for revenue
-
you are from an under-represented state at a college looking to maximize geographic diversity. Typically this means you either come from a far away state and/or a state with a tiny population. That means coming from neighboring Massachusetts isn’t going to help you get into UConn or Yale.
OOS hurts if the college (usually public) only admits a small percentage of OOS students (e.g. UT Austin).
It depends on the school and whether or not you’re full pay.
Good for the school, bad for you. Like an airline seat, you may be paying 2-3x more than the person next to you for exactly the same service.
If they are public schools in popular states, then you need to be willing to pay big bucks and have competitive stats.
If they are privates, then you need to be from a small state and have competitive stats.
