Out of state -> in state tuition

Hey guys! Does anyone know if it’s possible to get in state tuition after freshman year because otherwise out of state tuition all 4 years is unaffordable. I’m guessing living and working in Wisconsin over the summer? If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you

If you’re a declared dependent on your parents/guardian tax return you’ll be OSS even if you work in WI for the summer. You must be financially independent plus there probably is a length of time residency requirement.

So there’s nothing at all I can do?

Nothing at all. Being in Wisconsin to attend college will prevent you from getting in state tuition.

Move there and work full-time for 2 years without attending UW. Be financially independent. That might do it .

That will not do it.

OP…here are Wisconsin’s residency rules and FAQs.

Yes it will. One year iffy but two works.

A friend has a special circumstance. His daughter and wife live in CA, but he works in MN, and has for the past 10 months, commuting back every few weeks to see them. Once he fills out a MN tax return, is it likely his daughter can get Minnesota tuition rates if she goes to Madison? How quickly do they make a decision like this?

Minnesota residency is decided by MN, not Wisconsin. Your friend would have to investigate MN requirements for residency. Filling out tax forms does not prove residency. It is where you live, not work, that counts. Also remember that residents do things like drivers license and voter registration to prove they are residents of a community. btw, owning property, residential or otherwise, does not confer residency status.
