out of state interview during internship...

How would you handle being called for an on-site weekday interview at a location that is out of the state of where you are currently doing your internship? With the interviewing company paying for plane ticket. Assuming as an intern you don't have benefits as full time employees (sick days, etc.)

by asking your boss with honesty? (start there, though I realize that that is not always an option)

A few options:

ask for a day of unpaid leave

try to “work” from home

tell your boss and see what they say

If you are working an internship, there should be no expectation that you will sign on to a full time position, and if you have an interview for a full time job, there is nothing wrong with being honest about it. That said, that kind of honesty is easier said than done. I’d try to set a tentative date with the company you are interviewing, then try to just take a personal day at your internship. If your boss presses, either tell the whole truth or just say that it is a personal matter.

By the way, congratulations on getting an interview!
