Out of State Merit Aid for UT Austin or Texas A&M engineering?

Wondering about my chances of getting any kind of aid from UT Austin or TAMU? The out-of-state tuitions costs are rather high. My stats are:
ACT: 34
National Merit Commended
5.06 GPA on a weighted 4.00 scale
Class Rank: 6/198
6 APs, Scored a 5 on APUSH, 4 on Biology, rest are TBD

Extracurricular:
Club Volleyball
Varsity Volleyball
Math Team
Worked for paining company over two summers

Service:
Mission trip to domestic abuse shelter in wisconsin
Coaching youth volleyball for two seasons
Volunteering at grades school volleyball camp
Volunteer court monitor at parish 3 on 3 basketball camp

Awards:
Spanish NHS
Varsity letters in volleyball
Youth Servant Leadership Award from local parish
Honors with Distinction (5.00+ GPA)

UTexas has gotten rid of most merit because it’s focusing on need-based aid for instate students. You can try, but don’t count on any money from UT.

TAMU does have some awards, so you might get some…however, be aware that TAMU has a HIGH GPA reqt to keep their merit…3.5…that may sound like a piece of cake, but eng’g majors OFTEN fall below that because a couple of B’s in classes that are 4 or 5 credits each can easily sink a GPA below 3.5. If you lose your scholarship and your parents will not pay for that loss, then you’d have to leave…and your merit chances elsewhere will be non-existent. So, keep that in mind.

NMCommended is nice, but no merit for that.

Your ECs don’t really matter for merit…the awards are for really for stats.

How much will your parents pay each year?

What is your home state?

which area of eng’g?

Ok…it looks like ChemE is your major? My son was ChemE

And are you from AZ?? guessing from your name. (edit…you’re from IL

UIUC won’t give you any merit either.

If your parents won’t pay for schools that don’t give merit and cost more than their budget, don’t bother.

edit…I see that your parents will pay for UIUC instate. Are they aware of how expensive UIUC is these days? ( may be even higher for en’g students…don’t know). Just make sure that they know the cost of UIUC.

What are the schools on your list?

edit …I just checked…are your parents aware of the cost for UIUC for instate eng’g students? The COA is quite high because the tuition is about $5k per year more…so COA is about $35k per year.

Thanks! My parents are willing to pay for the instate $35k/year, but not much more than that. UT Austin looks to be crossing that line which is why they’re hoping I’ll get some money.

oh yeah…UT is more than crossing the $35k line…it is way over the line…

Tuition and fees …$34,836

Room and board …$11,456
Books and supplies …$750 <<===== this estimate is low for engineering.
Estimated personal expenses …$2,820

Transportation expenses …$1,490
Estimated Total… $51,352

I don’t know if UT charged more tuition for eng’g majors…maybe someone here knows.

You can apply and see, but UTexas has been stingy with merit since it changed its focus to need based aid for instate.

Just checked…UTexas does have a higher tuition for eng’g majors…

Engineering tuition for the CURRENT 2015-16 school year <= next year will be higher.

OOS 18,006 per semester…$36,012 per year <= this will go up each year.

So the COA for this year is about $53k for an OOS eng’g student.

the avg merit award from UTexas was under $6000 per year…not much.

Thanks for your help!
