Hey all,
Just got accepted OOS to Urban and Regional Planning Major with very strong stats, but the only way I’ll attend is if I can bring the price down. I probably won’t get much need aid, but how much merit aid can someone OOS get? Also, when would those decisions be released? Thanks.
Sorry: The CSU’s do not fund OOS students. They accepted you because they expect you to pay full fees.
Cal Poly is a California public school that does not have any extra money for OOS students. If you were to get any merit aid, you have to understand that it would not be much, maybe $2k per year.
If anything, most monies are reserved for in-state students. Californians, who receive merit aid, have GPA’s that are typically over 4.0’s.
The large, significant monies are given, in grants, to in-state students through the California Student Aid Commission. As an OOS student, without a California HS diploma, you are not eligible.
Plan on paying $40K per year as an OOS student at a public California university.
It’s actually more around $36k/year for OOS freshmen, and $2k/year is better than nothing. Wish cal poly were more like the UCs and not so anti-OOS…
?? The UCs don’t have need-based aid for OOS students either, and the base price there is much more (~$60k).
If you look at this link, the average non-need based aid for SLO students (merit scholarships) was around $2000 for First time Freshman with around 14% of these students getting these amounts.
As stated above by @aunt bea, CSU’s are public universities and aid is provided to in-state applicants with financial need.
Expect to pay full fees, but you should check your major department’s website for major related scholarships you could apply.
Both Cal Poly and the upper UCs plan for 15-20% OOS to bring in more tuition to offset state funding shortfalls. About the most you can hope for OOS merit is $2000/year. There isn’t much instate merit either. It’s mostly need-based.
Well if anybody wants an update, I got a 1k/year scholarship. Nice, but not enough to sway my decision from my top choice (McGill). Thanks for the help though!
