Does anyone have any recent experience in receiving UK merit scholarships from out of state?

My DD'13 is considering applying to UK, (Currently 31 ACT, 2050 SAT, 3.99 UW GPA) and we are wondering if it will be worthwhile financially speaking for the family.

Any info provided would be greatly appreciated.

No experience with UK but you should also check out U South Carolina. Lots of merit money and tuition remission to instate level with most grants.

Are you Legacy? If you are Legacy, UK will give you the in-state tuition rate since she received an ACT 31.

She also qualifies for the Provost scholarship of $3,000 per year (for a non-resident)

Since she got a 31 on her ACT she can apply for the competitive scholarships for Freshmen. She might qualify for the National Excellence Scholarship which is $4500 each year for 4 years. (This replaces the Provost if she qualifies)

Depending on her major, individual departments also give scholarships but they are not guaranteed.

Unfortunately, no Legacy…
If she applies she will definately apply for the competitive scholarships, but she appears to be just barely eligible (ie, eligibility starts at 31 ACT)-- She re-took a week or two ago, so perhaps she will get better results.

I think we will try to schedule a visit in the next few weeks. And take it from there.

Much thanks to all!! I will share the outcome if/when she applies so that others can use as a gauge.

Just a quick update on progress. DD13 applied back in early Oct and was accepted about 4 weeks later. Her stats remain the same (31, 2050, 3.99). She received the provost scholarship. which brings OOS Tuition from ~$20K down to ~$17K + Room and board, books, etc. Well at least it is headed in the right direction. Competive scholarship results are released in Mid Jan. Will post an update later. Hopefully, this helps others as they consider UK from OOS

I think you will find out about competitive scholarships from UK in March. The mid January date you referred to is the due date for all applications. Good Luck!

Competitive Scholarships do come out in March, except for the Singletary Scholarship and perhaps the National Merit one. The interviews for that began in November and decisions will be out by the end of February.

Just a quick update. We received, yesterday, a scholarship letter for the $4500 National Excellence Scholarship. I think my DD has her heart set on another school. Hope this helps others looking at at UK.

Wanted to share my son’s experience. First of all, we were super impressed with Kentucky’s effort to “roll out the red/blue carpet” to high acheiving prospects. I dragged my son to their “See Blue” preview night in the early fall and up until that point he had very little interest in UK. Somehow he ended up winning a Kindle Fire door prize at the See Blue event and was instructed to spend some time talking to a Provost who was in attendance. The Provost encouraged my son to apply for the full-ride Singletary scholarship. Upon leaving the open house, my son’s interest changed drastically. He was impressed with how well he was treated at the See Blue event and was immediately interested in applying.

After applying and being accepted to UK, my son was also invited to a Kentucky Scholars recognition event in early November. Again, we were impressed with the effort UK put into this event. My husband, son and I were treated to a nice meal, a tour, and my son was recognized for his scholastic acheivments along with about 200 other students. He also was given a UK pullover and a certificate. We are not Kentucky residents and we did notice that the majority of the kids invited to the banquet were from Kentucky.

In early January he was invited to interview for the Singletary Scholarship. We drove a couple hours to Lexington and he was interviewed by 3 faculity members. In mid February he was notified he did not get the Singletary but did get the Presidential scholarship which covered 4 years of out of state tuition ($80,000 value).

All in all, my son has decided not to attend UK as he has a better offer at another school but his experience as an out of state applicant was still a great experience. We heard they give roughly 50 Singletary Scholarships but I’m not sure how many Presidential Scholarshlps are given.

His stats are:

34 ACT
4.33 weighted GPA
Several AP courses (scores ranging in the 4’s and 5’s)
Not a National Merit Finalist
Class President
4 Years Varsity Basketball
Mock Trial
National Honor Sociatey
Roughly 200-300 volunteer hours
And a few other ECs

We came out of the process thinking that they are really looking for students who will be the “face of the university” and I think they utilize the Singletary recipients to “market” the university in a way. It seems as they were looking for extroverted leaders who are comfortable “working a crowd” as we noticed many of the current Singletary winners doing just that during the See Blue event and the Scholars Banquet.

We could see the commitment UK is putting into renovating the dorms and the new Honors dorm that opens next fall looked great. We also noticed that everyone there was over the top nice and very welcoming. My son had a great experience competing for merit scholarships there but still the competition is stiff especially for out of state applicants.

We had nearly the exact same experience as @weliketogo. We are out of state also. Daughter went to a See Blue event with little interest in UK (she just didn’t really know anything about it), was asked to go by a friend who really wanted to go to UK. She was very impressed with the event and the welcoming, knowledgeable people representing the university. My daughter and her friend are both strong students at competitive high schools with ACT scores above 31. Both have quite a few activities, volunteer hours, etc. Both received interviews for the competitive scholarships. Waiting to hear the results.

@4kidsinarow Hi, I just came across your post (I know it’s old) but I was wondering if your daughter received the presidential scholarship? My stats are very similar to hers and I was hoping to apply in the fall and also apply for competitive scholarships but I’m not sure how competitive they are (specifically the presidential scholarship). Do you think I would be able to receive the presidential scholarship with a 1390 (CR+M) SAT score?
