Any out of state legacies out there who can post their scores/ grades/ extra curricular activities/ other hooks on here? I am just starting to freak out about this. Say if accepted/deferred/waitlisted in past.
Freak out about what?
As I recall from what someone in the Admissions Office told me, OOS legacy status doesn’t really do anything except maybe act as a tiebreaker; unlike some Ivies, it doesn’t really give you much of a leg up and there’s not a separate pool of OOS legacy applicants who are considered.
I am just curious to see folks who have been granted that status and how they have faired with admissions. My parents both received a letter with some statistics about students with legacy status but also a warning about how difficult admission is out of state. More just looking to see where I stand. I suppose I should share some info
SAT: 2180 (720 reading) (700 math) (760 writing)
3.7 unweighted gpa (math killed me every year, applying as poli sci)
9 ap classes (Chem-3, US History-5, Language and Comp 5)
varsity football (all league/all area)
varsity track and field
student council
stock market club
live outside of Philly in New Jersey
both parents are alum.
Yes, we got that letter with the language about legacy students as well.
My OOS senior was admitted after EA application, with stats/ECs very similar to yours; but we were still somewhat surprised (pleasantly, of course) by the admission. I think that the quality of the essays was an important factor, also.
jnl4at, what about considering your candidacy in your own right? Hey there’s a thought…not relying on parents coat-tails!
I am considering my candidacy in my own right and merely comparing myself to other students with the same status. No need to be so smug.
I was waitlisted and deferred with similar stats (higher grades, lower test scores) and several extracurriculars and awards (not anything extremely extraordinary) and 5 AP Classes. I have one parent who’s an alumni and several family members who are two. You seem like a strong applicant for sure!
