Out of state scholarship $

Anyone have any clue as to when Illinois starts letting out of state applicants know?
They say March/April...Too vague for me

I’ve already gotten notified for three scholarships - did you apply ED or RD?

i applied priority

Keep in mind that a fair percentage of those first awarded scholarships may well decide to go elsewhere, so those scholarships may be re-allocated to other students who might have been borderline/waitlisted scholarship candidates.

I’m not expecting FA, but some FA will really makes my parent some relief.

But my friend who also accepted by engineering school, James Scholar, OOS too, his EFC is around 16000. He is so anxious about FA.

As best as I have been able to figure it, merit scholarships qualifications start around an ACT of 34 and being near the top of your class (feel free to correct me if you qualified with lower stats – let’s get some real hard numbers here!)

Financial aid-dependent scholarships are a different beast and probably aren’t out yet, since the FAFSA deadline is today.

from what i’ve seen, class rank is VERY important. i had ACT of 35, but only rank of 5.5% and didn’t receive a dime (not entirely true… i may receive 12k for business honors program but thats given to all OOS members)

Mummer - all the OOS students in hornor will have 12K? How about engineering honor?

So class rank trumps ACT score? My son’s got $18k/year in merit scholarships so far (in-state, so no OOS), but with a 36.0 ACT and #1/400 class rank, there’s no way to determine which stat UIUC is looking for the most.

Repost from my prior thread on admissions:

@march i didnt think illinois had an engineering honors program… only james scholars. either way, i believe only the business honors kids are guaranteed a merit schol (4k IS, 12k OOS)
@lorem, mocking- even though illinois states that, my experiences say differently. i got nothing, my brother (who due to a move, had no class rank) got nothing 2 years back with a 3.92 UW (6 APs and plenty more honors) and 2190 SAT, and a friend from one of thr best schools in michigan with no rank got nothing with 2200+ SAT and like a 3.9 gpa. the way i see it, class rank is the key

Mumurthigal, it could well be that UIUC has become more aggressive the last year or two in wooing those with top stats (however they interpret that). I believe the Premier Engineering Scholarship is new this year – and at $15k/year for 4 years, it’s pretty significant.

For decades, the state flagship could count on many top students in the Midwest not even considering elite east-coast schools, no matter what their stats were. However, prices at state schools have risen sharply this last decade and, with the Internet, it’s becoming better and better known that elite private colleges may often be cheaper in net dollars than state schools – at least for those families with fairly modest means. It was not much more than a year ago that I discovered that the Ivies could cost us less than perhaps even community college.

Change in academia moves slowly. It could be the administrators are finally beginning to notice the cumulative drop-off of talent at the very top, as those candidates accept positions elsewhere. It could be that the professors with the research dollars are not getting enough fresh talent to do the grunt work. It could be due to a lot of reasons, but I seem to recall that UIUC was considered to be quite a “cheapskate” with merit aid just a few short years ago – and that seems to be changing.

What if the high school doesn’t rank students?

Each school sends out a custom profile of the school along with your transcript. It will most likely contain such items as the highest, lowest and average GPA in the class, perhaps both weighted and unweighted. This should be enough for UIUC to at least determine your relative strength vis-a-vis your classmates.

Ask your counselor for a copy to look over.

so it appears as if i may have lied. i figured out today that College of Business awards OOS kids their University Achievement Awards based on admittance into the honors program. so i actually got this 12k award.
