My daughter has a gpa of 3.91 unweighted and 3.97 weighted she is ranked 22 of 469 seniors and has a 33 on her ACT... She wants a bachelors degree in Nursing... She has had 5 college tours in our home state of Michigan with two verbal offers for a full ride scholarship... She would really like an out of state college experience but would probably not pass up a full ride... Does anyone know if out of state colleges are likely to offer what in state colleges would?

If I read this right, she’d qualify for a full ride at the University of Alabama: [Out-of-State Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html)

And, here’s their Nursing page: [Capstone College of Nursing - The University of Alabama](http://nursing.ua.edu/)

Congrats to your daughter! I’m curious as to what schools in MI offered full ride scholarships. My son has similar stats (here in Michigan)…and no such offers coming his way. He will likely be taking advantage of the full OOS tuition scholarship from Univ. of Alabama.

DB … she would get full tuition at UA but not quite full ride, still has housing food etc

UAB in alabama would also offer her full tuition…15K/year against total cost of attendance of 20-24K (works out a bit cheaper than UA as housing is less) total out of pocket would be 5-9K per year

UAB also has a direct admit program to nursing which UA doesnt have

surrounding the UAB campus are about 7 hospitals

<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found;

unless she is an NMF then both schools offer a full ride

OP, are you sure your D was offered a full ride and not full tuition? Not too many schools throw in room and board anymore.

She has had 5 college tours in our home state of Michigan with two verbal offers for a full ride scholarship.… She would really like an out of state college experience but would probably not pass up a full ride

When you say “full ride”, do you mean “full tuition scholarship”…

or do you mean a scholarship that covers Tuition, Room, Board, Books, etc? A full ride includes EVERYTHING.

As mentioned above, The University of Alabama (the flagship) would give your D a full tuition scholarship for her stats if she applies by Dec 1st (the app is quick and easy). She could get more from the College of Nursing, especially if she has higher offers elsewhere.

3.97 weighted she is ranked 22 of 469 seniors and has a 33 on her ACT.

Since your D has strong stats, I wouldn’t worry about a nursing program that doesn’t have Direct Admission. By having to qualify during the soph year allows the school to prevent those who don’t have what it takes to continue. Since your D has the stats to do well in a pre-med program, she certainly has the stats to do well in pre-nursing. :)

Bama has a brand new state of the art College of Nursing building

This fall over 50% of the frosh are from out of state. Overall, the school has about 45% OOS students…including students from all 50 states.

This thread shows you where some Bama families are from…

Your D would also qualify for Bama’s amazing Honors College

You are all correct in thinking the offers would be full tuition… Sorry I did not make that clear…

while that may be true that she could get accepted to nursing later…it is definitely worth a look at a direct admit…gets rid of alot of pressure… there are benefits to direct admission that should be considered

Does UAB still have direct admission into Nursing?

It looks like UAB has students apply their soph year just like Bama does.

[UAB - BSN Admission Requirements](<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found)

From the UAB website…

BSN Admission Requirements

First-time college students who complete the first two years at UAB and then apply for admission to the School of Nursing for the upper-division nursing curriculum.

•Work with an assigned pre-nursing advisor through the UAB Office of General Studies during the first two years at the university

•Students who complete their pre-nursing curriculum at UAB are eligible for priority consideration for admission to the upper-division nursing curriculum as either Nursing Scholars or Pre-Nursing Scholars.

I totally understand why schools do it this way. Some kids just don’t have the stats to become nurses.

Again, I don’t think it’s a problem for this student. She has what it takes to become a RN.
