20,000 applicants already for 2007 class, versus a total of 19,000 total for the class starting last year.

By the way, you can subscribe to an email version of The Lantern (OSU's campus paper). It's an interesting way to keep tabs on what's happening on campus. The Columbus Dispatch online (www.dispatch.com) is also a good source of OSU news.

Thank you for the info. I had looked and looked for that. D is worried about "everyone" being from Ohio. It appears 85% are.

Anyone know the Honors/Scholars numbers?

BTW, I do get the email Lantern. For the most part I enjoy it. When we were on campus this weekend, H picked up a freebie newspaper. He noticed bar ads on every page. Do the bars even try to check IDs? At least half of the undergraduates aren't legal.

When my D and my husband went to Scholars Day a few weeks ago, they also noticed that the overwhelming majority of students there seemed to be from Ohio, although they also mentioned that the students that they encountered seemed to be very friendly. The percentage of OOS seems somewhat lower compared to other state schools that my D has looked at, and yet it definitely seems like TOSU is trying to reach out to OOS students.

Well the vast majority of people here are from Ohio, and it's kind of a novelty to be out of state, I feel like there are more out-of-staters in Honors. I could be wrong, as I have no evidence other than anecdotal, but I've met plenty of people from outside of Ohio, including a few international students.

Oh, and MaryTN - more than half of undergraduates are legal, because most people turn 21 during their junior year, and there is a GOOD chunk of people who take more than five years to graduate. It's not that it's hard to graduate in four years, you just have to plan ahead and take GECs, instead of waiting until senior year to remember that you have a lot of GECs to complete, as well as your major.

I'm 18 and have never been to a bar, so I can't say whether they check IDs or not, but suffice it to say, there is plenty to do on campus that doesn't involve alcohol. My roommates and I (and many of our friends) are completely sober, and we can barely get our homework done for all the hanging out, socializing, talking, playing, etc. we do.

I still haven't found the information regarding the number of out-of-state students in Honors and Scholars. Have any of you seen any statistics?

No, I haven't seen any OOS/in-state statistics for H&S. We've been assuming that the H&S ratios would be relatively consistent with the ratios for the school at large. If nobody else on this forum has the figures, I would think that you could email H&S and they should be able to provide you with that info..? It's a good question, and if you do find out the answer, I'd be interested to know, as well.

(I just realized that, in my previous post, I provided the same Lantern article link as Penniless Parent did a few posts ahead of me--duh! :o Oh well, it was an interesting read.)
