Ok, so i'm planning on attending the CSULB campus as an OSS during the 2012 term, and i was wondering about the process of becoming a cali resident by my sophomore years beginning.

If i, for example, live on campus all year round, never leaving even during holidays, will i be considered a cali resident? Or, do i have to live off campus for that to take place? By all year round, i mean a full year, 365 days, and through the summer.

Or, would i have to live in an apartment or something similar to claim residency? Get a job, maybe?

Hi there
As long as you are physically present in the state for one year then you can be a resident by Fall 2013 term and get resident tuition.
You can ask the registrar’s office about filing documents and I’m sure they’ll help you with what you need (CA driver’s license, CA voting registration, CA tax if you are employed, local address etc)
By then they will reclassify you as a resident student
Hope this helps! =)

I’ve actually read a few places that just because you live in state to go to school, doesn’t mean the school will grant you residency. Residency is only given to those who intend to make California their permanent home, at least according to the CCC/Chancellors website. So, just because you go to school here for a year, doesn’t mean you’ll get residency, even if you don’t leave. But what it boils down to is making it look like you plan on being permanent. So, you’ll have to register to vote, get a CA drivers license, and likely find employment so you can pay taxes. I mean, they really can’t prove you don’t plan on being here for a long time beyond college right?

Oh- and just because you plan on living here doesn’t mean you can’t go visit your family. So you aren’t stuck here for a year. Just don’t make your vacations back home to visit too long.

Hi!
I am also attending CSULB in fall as an OOS student.
I have done a lot of research on obtaining residency and their are 4 conditions you must satisfy.
You must be 19.
You must live in California for a year.
You must provide intent to stay after you graduate (registering your vehicle, getting a CA license, registering to vote AND voting, or several other things.)
You must be financially independent from your parents. This means they are NOT allowed to pay for your tution/housing/meals anymore and you are not allowed to spend more than 2 months a year away from CA. You must have a steady job as well.

Cool, thanks! So basically i gotta prove that i’ll be staying in the state, by changing all my WI stuff (license etc) to CA stuff. As for the college payments? Ya, i was already paying for it lol, so that’s easily covered.

I had already planned to change everything to CA once i had arrived, didn’t know about the voting part though, so thanks everyone who mentioned that.
