out of state student with a question!

i'm not sure what GPA UCSD looks at for out of state, unweighted of weighted?

weighted, i have 3.4, unweighted i have 2.9...

however, it's not as bad (i hope) as it may seem at first. 9th and 10th year i had around a 3.5 unweighted and 3.9 weighted, but then junior year came and everything just effed up. this was because of some personal reasons that came up (doing too many activities in an attempt to search myself and my personal interests when it comes to college and beyond while juggling an insanely difficult courseload. however, my essay was all about how i learned from this experience and how i am mature now concerning self independence and what direction i want to go in in college which is engineering).

so my second question is hoping that senior grades will count. my senior grades should be all As wiith 2 Bs, (out of eight courses), so i hope this can show that i've become a determined student.

btw, SATs:

CR: 610
M: 800
W: 620

MATH IIC: 710
CHEM: 600

insane ECs and volunteer because that was the reason i did badly...

president of chess club
co-captain of cricket team
varsity track and field 4 years
taught computer lessons to adult students
secretary of student tutoring program at local library
webmaster and computer administrator at a local historical society
literature club for 4 yrs
violin for three years + plus two orchestras

medical center volunteer with 150 hrs (doc's assistant)
red cross with 150 hrs-ish (blood drive volunteer)
school computer administration worker for 2 years

any input is appreciated. thank you

you actually sound much like me.

my UC GPA is 3.59 or so. I went through some rough times junior year and thus had one semester where i got a 2.8. (my mom and dad divorced, right after which she had breast cancer, and she couldnt afford surgery and treatment and stuff etc..). all my other semesters were very good and i've taken 16 AP classes total.
i have very good ECs and my SAT is 2100 (SATIIs - French: 700 Lit: 670)
my essay was ALL about what happened to me and how i learned from my experience and in my opinion (as well as 10 students' and 2 teachers') was well written.
i've had around 250 volunteer hours and managed a $100,000 fundraiser..

anyway, i think you and me don't have a great chance being out of state kids (we'd be in if we were in state), but if you look at the index for calculating admissions for UCSD they used in 2004 we both make the cut.

honestly i think it comes down to the essay and how nice they feel that day.
all we can do now is cross our fingers, but if the context is understandable (like mine) they would be cold heartless bastards to not let us in.

yeah i'm out of state too (submitted UC apps on the 6th)
my stats are pretty similar to the previous two
it'd be really helpful if someone could make an evaluation? ty

That's tough... if you were an in-state student I'd say you'll definitely get in, but being out-of-state puts you at a huge disadvantage. Have you looked up the UCSD formula for admissions? They actually have a points system and they give you extra points for things like overcoming hardships and being the first in your family to go to college, so if any of those things apply to you they could compensate for your grades (you'll definitely get extra points for all your ECs, too).

sorry to bump this up :/

yeah i was OOS

for all you guys:
check out the "Before you ask for your CHANCE" thread for my stats

but im going to say that the stats look a little low, despite the incredible currics

Freshman grades don't count, and neither do senior grades.

OOS here too! haha.

Chinese immigrant. Came to the US at age 10, after living in China and Japan.

Unweighted: 3.6, weighted: 4.0 or 4.1
SAT I: 1900
SAT II: math 620, Chinese 780

lots of community service for more than 4 years (1,000 hrs total) and internationally-recognized awards..

I work 4 jobs currently.. most are related to communication and business

Just like ipwn, I wrote of my parents almost getting a divorce.. how i had to take time away from academics to take care of my younger sister. From that experience, i've grown a passion of taking care of younger children. Summer of 2005, went back to China and organized English classes to teach some orphans.

1) senior year grades don't count for any of the UC's

2) you should have a decent chance. you said ur bad GPA by writing about it in the essay and your great SAT scores

Senior grades do count, don't screw up and get like a D in a class.

your admission to a UC is conditional: you're required to have at least a 3.0.

is that 3.0 unweighted? 0_0 AP's are killlllllllling meeeeeee

i'm pretty sure the 3.0 is unweighted for UCs...except for UCSD.

when I say "dont count", I mean it doesnt play a role in part of the admission decision
