Out of state student

Pomona just appeared on the radar screen of my rising senior D. She is a native Californian but due to divorce we now live in TN. She is currently #1 in her class at a private school and will most likely be at least a NMSF if not a NMF. Her ECs are not numerous but show depth of involvement by leadership positions in Model UN and Youth in Govt which is huge here in TN. She is also a cross country runner and has had summer jobs and volunteered locally and internationally (Peru). She has received academic awards in every subject she has taken as a sophomore and junior. She will be coeditor of the school paper and has won poetry awards and writing awards at her school. She has been active in the school Forensics team in a leadership role and is competitive in original oratory. SAT scores are still pending. Any advice on her chances?
Her father still lives in California.

Bein out of state doesnt matter because Pomona is a private institution.
It is impossible to chance someone at all, we cant do it well anyways, without GPA and test scores and such.
As for ECs they look good and it looks like she is on track.

Everything you've mentioned sounds like good things for Pomona. GPAs, SAT, etc. are also relevant of course, as well as recommendations and essays.

With all that said, Pomona is highly selective, so even with great qualifications, noone's admission is guaranteed.

Depending on her interests, some of the other Claremont College schools may also be of interest to her. Students at the 5 schools can take courses at the other schools. My d., for example, applied to both Pomona and Scripps, and will be attending Scripps this fall. Scripps has a scholarship that pays 1/2 the tuition - not a free ride, but worth looking at.

If her SAT scores are at or above 2250 (750 each part) I suggest she consider Scripps and apply by the Nov 1st deadline to try for the 1/2 tuition JES scholarship.
Over 500 students apply for it and they have about 100 finalists come out in Feb for a weekend and interviews.
My daughter is going to Scripps now but she also applied to Pomona, got waitlisted at Pomona. Her application year I saw a lot of people on CC get rejected or waitlisted at Pomona that you thought would have made it.
I would think coming from TN would give an edge over being a CA applicant at any of the Claremonts.
Daughter took 1 class at Pomona her Freshman year and is signed up for another this Fall.

Don't let your daughter get detered if her sat/gpa isnt too high... i got accepted with a 33 ACT / 3.9 UW gpa. however, i took many aps / community college classes.

Numbers aren't everything; it's more like the students they want to accept tend to have high GPA/SAT scores than the actual numbers causing them to get in. I was in with a ~3.4 GPA.

I'm from Tennessee, and I got in this year.(class of 2012!!) Pomona is an extraordinary institution that offers way more than any college in TN does except maybe Vandy. I really encourage your child to apply and visit.

Pomona also is very generous with financial aid but gives no merit scholarship. If she is really interested in Pomona, do apply to Pomona and if money is not a consideration, applying ED gives you a better chance.
