Thanks for the feedback. I was concerned reading about how rural some college towns were and assumed they would have something available but will definitely have that checked out once she decides on where. She has one of those Schwinn roadsters that she loves. She will have a good bike lock and is aware that if it gets stolen it does not get replaced. She envisions herself biking at one of those large campuses to explore and relax.

If she is going to be at a large campus, it’s not really going to be “rural”.

By large I meant acreage where she can bike on trails or around a lake etc… but she may surprise us and go to a large urban university. She is still putting a list together of where she is interested.

Free advice…don’t send the good bike. Get a used one. Even “good bike locks” are broken into.

My son’s college makes it pretty easy for the students. Over summer break they bring in big storage containers and the students can store their entire dorm room of stuff there for free until fall.

YMMV with regard to whether the college itself offers summer storage. Most do not. But your student should not have trouble finding summer storage for college students in the college town. Just make sure the place is DRY and has AC…summer is a good time to breed mold. Oh, and tell them to do the laundry before putting things in storage.

DD2 attends school 2K miles from home. She is able to leave clothes, etc in the room over normal breaks. All items must be cleared in the summer. Each student can store two boxes in a storage room provided for each dorm. Lot’s of things came home after the first year and didn’t go back sophomore year.

We have made things even more difficult for our kids. We moved back overseas when DS#2 went to college - so right now no home to go back to, no place to store extra stuff, nothing.

DS#2 already has a storage unit in Baton Rouge for excess stuff. DS#1 will get one at Penn State this summer to store his stuff. Last summer he packed up everything and took it to MIL’s house, 90 minutes away.

I will say…I FAR preferred the rented storage unit during the summer over having the “stuff” in my living room!!!

thumper1 - didn’t have to deal with it in my living room, but from what friends have told me - I agree 100%!!!

D’s school is a 24-hour drive. They provide limited summer storage for free, based on zip code of residence, but it’s not enough. She has gone in with other students on a storage unit. She flies home; ships stuff home for the summer/long breaks if needed. When she flies, she takes public transportation to the airport, and has to be physically able to manage any luggage off and on subways & busses.

There are surprisingly several companies that provide this kind of service - collegeboxes, dorm2dorm, boxmydorm, etc.

A new wrinkle this year was spring semester abroad. She had to move out until next fall during finals in December and decide what she needed for the spring & summer. She found other students to go in with & managed. I figure it’s part of their education, learning to manage life!

Echo the college bike advice. Get used bike, preferably a beater. Even a beater may get stolen, but the uglier it is the less attractive it is to thieves.
