Out of State Students

Hi there! I’m currently a junior who is hoping to apply to William and Mary for the class of 2020. I’ve heard that W&M is fairly strict about their in-state to out-of-state student ratio, so I was wondering if there are different standards for out-of-state admissions. I currently have a 4.57 weighted GPA and a 2120 SAT score (though I will be taking it again to hopefully improve). By the end of my senior year, I am planning on having taken 8-9 AP courses, and I received a 5 on my AP World History Exam. I lead two clubs and am involved in a few others, but as of now, I have not participated in any sports. As an out of state student, will I be judged differently from applicants living in Virginia? Are there any other goals I should shoot for in my senior year to improve my chances of being accepted? (e.g. SAT subject tests, a certain SAT score…?)
Thanks!

2/3 of their class must come from VA. I personally know two students there who were not athletes but they are impressive students. I have no idea what their grades and test scores were but they were into EC’s. Google their “Common Data Set” and you can plot your chances on your own. It will tell you what criteria are considered. Schools consider interviews, level of interest, volunteerism, test scores, etc. at different rates. W&M is an Early Decision school so if it is your #1 choice consider getting your app in early. IMO you sound perfect for them. What a way to spend a Saturday night! Good luck.

Yes the academic standards are a little different between IS and OOS to end up with the correct ratio of residents. This is likely true at every respected public school.
Your grades and test scores sound fine.
W&M seems to place great emphasis on personality. Look up TWAMP to get an idea of the kind of student they like to fill their class with. Try to follow interests and write essays that are just different enough from HS standard.

Out of state students are compared to other out of state students during admissions. Those accepted from out of state seem to have scores and GPA’s that are a little above average.

Out of state student here. Typically, yes, it is more competitive for out of state students to get in mostly because the state mandates Virginia schools to have a certain ratio of instate versus out of state students. It is a public school after all. I would just try to make yourself as competitive as possible, while still sticking to your passions. Since W&M has hollistic admissions, I wouldn’t compare yourself to other applicants, but if you look at the most recent RD results, it is getting quite a bit more competitive.

I agree that they seem to have an emphasis on essays and personality, but I slightly disagree that they are trying to fill their class with one type of person or that you should emulate that person. Just be yourself is probably one of the best pieces of advice I could give you.

Lastly, there are overnights in the fall, interviews you could do, and yes even ED if you are inclined to go that route if you really decide you love the school. Good luck with everything!

You should be pretty competitive. We are from IL and D was admitted as a Monroe scholar. Her GPA was lower 4.4, about the same number of APs with four completed when she applied. Her ACT was a 36 though but otherwise similar

Hello, what is an overnight? Thanks!
