Do out of state students feel out of place at UT-Austin? Also, is it worth going there if paying oos tuition? Lastly, how easy is it to gain residency to pay in state tuition?

The answers are it is easy to become an instate resident. Texas is one of the most liberal states in allowing a change in resident status. Most of my d friends have switched over. There are a couple of ways to do it, see other threads. Yes OOS kids are happy at UT. MY d is in a sorority, and many girls are out of state. They are all happy and pleased with their choice of school.

My son is OOS, in the engineering school. He is certainly finding it challenging! He’s doing OK, but he’s on crutches right now which is a problem.

Hello Maine,

I wanted to ask you. Is he finding the social life challenging, the work, or making the adjustment. Is he on crutches from a running injury? Hope his challenges get easier.

socaldad42, the classes are harder than he expected, and he was a strong student in HS (AP Physics and Calculus were a breeze for him). He’s also kind of shy, so he hasn’t made too many friends. His legs started hurting him middle of last year, at the end of cross country season, and they’ve gradually gotten worse and worse. My parents are in Austin and are taking him to an orthopedist and a chiropractor. Thanks for thinking of him! He talked to an older biomedical student who went through similar problems as a freshman, and the guy was very encouraging. He said this is just a brief blip and the best thing to do is focus on studying.

Maine,

Thanks for the complete update. Sorry to hear that all is not rosy. Frosh year is a challenge for many. My d found the work difficult her first semester. She struggled with finding a balance and rhythm. She underperformed her first semester. Second was much better. I am sure he will find his way. Sorry to hear about the physical ailments. Best wishes on that front.

socaldad, thanks for sharing about your daughter! That’s reassuring. I think DS’s experience is good for him - he’s always been the type of kid who has breezed through everything, so a little adversity will teach him a lot. And he DOES have a lot of support from his grandparents, so he’s lucky!

OOS Freshman here.

I love this place!

The work IS a bit hard. Especially calculus (failing at the moment but working on bringing it up, thank god for curve). But I’m doing well in most of my classes so thats good.

Im happy here though and thats the most important part.

Not to highjack the thread but my D is a freshman also and has found this first semester to be very challenging…socal dad…thanks for sharing your D’s experience…it makes me feel a little better…my D is also in a sorority and her particular sorority has a realatively high GPA to meet compared to some of the others…I am just hoping she can meet it at this point…

for what it’s worth, D has several friends from out of state and she says they are very happy…a couple of them are from California :)
