I am from the Sa Francisco Bay area, and I am interested in going to University of Oregon.

As you all know, the tuition and the housing fee are very expensive. So, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to gain residency in Oregon and pay in state tuition starting from my sophomore year.

No, it’s not that easy in most states, and Oregon is no different. To be considered a resident for in-state tuition you need to live in the state, either as a dependent student to a parent or parents who live and work in Oregon, or as an independent student who has lived in the state for at least a year while supporting yourself financially. If you are taking more than 8 credits at any time during that year, you are presumed to be in the state for the purposes of getting an education and so that year will not count for purposes of establishing residency.

Most states have that limitation because otherwise it would be easy for out-of-state students to get in-state status by their second year of college.

If you’d like to discuss residency directly with an admissions cousnelor, the best person to speak with is Brian Stanley, the UO’s residency officer. Here are his contact details:

I have a similar question, but my situation is a lite bit diferente, I move from WA to Oregon with my wife, bout we been working in Oregon for 2 years, and during that time I was taking classes at the CC in Albany, finally After 16 month living in Oregon I was accepted at OSU. I paid Out state tuition my first term, and now I am seeking pay In state tuition for the next fall.
I applied and they denied my request, because they say that I came here for education purposes. How is that posible if i never toke more than 8 credits at OSU? ,and those 8 credits that I toke were after 16 month living in Oregon.
If you took ANY CLASSES while you were working, then they have to classify you as OOS.
So did you take ANY classes in Oregon? I’m confused because you said two different things.
I believe that you have to work at a full time job and show evidence of self-support without taking ANY classes for a minimum of one year and two years from the date of determination. If you have proof that you had full time work for two years and didn’t take classes AT ALL, then you need to go into the residency office and show that proof.
