out of state transfer chances

hey guys i have a 3.65 gpa after 110 quarter hours. i'm coming from a community college and would be applying as a philosophy major with all of the pre-reqs completed. i have superior recs and extracurricular activities. what do you think my chances are?

for Cal, you have a pretty low chance, since you're OOS. but for UCLA, i think you're in a fairly good standing. doesn't hurt to try for either.

Cal likes EC's, but it would help greatly if your GPA was higher, +3.8

What UC's are you looking at? UCB and UCLA will be difficult for you to get in. It is not because you are not a bad applicant it is because the UC system UCB and UCLA more so only accept a limited number of out of state students. However this does not mean you will not be accepted, so don't give up hope.

hey what if i was OOS but already @ a UC and wanna go to CAL or LA. maybe with a 3.8 or something

i'd prefer berkeley but ucla would be fine as well...so u think i have a shot at berkeley bu a low one, but a pretty good chance at ucla? thanks

???????????????????????

?????????????????????

lol dude the whole chance me thing is a total crapshoot. with that gpa you are in contention... which is the most honest answer you are gonna get.

??????????????????

???????????????????????????????

congratulations longhorn you have been accepted to ucla and ucb.

is this what you are looking to hear? well now you heard it. nobody f'ing knows what your chances are bud.

I'd advice you to look at the UCLA website. They actually post the average GPA of those applicants that were accepted for each major department. As for Cal I'd say your chances are 50/50. I got accepted into Political Science with only 3.66 GPA. The Social Sciences department only accepts 25% of applicants. I believe Philosophy is listed with the Humanities and thus has a higher acceptance rate.

However, if I am any indication, GPA does not give the whole story. They look at grade trends, depth of courses, interest in major and other outside factors. Your better off talking with a UCLA or UCB advisor when they come to your campus in the Fall. In the meantime I'd argue that you should try to evaluate yourself as a student and attempt to improve upon the weaknesses that may hurt your application (ie: Raise GPA).

Also, what exactly do you mean by "superior" recs and extra curriculars?

At CalSo they gave us the statistics for the transferring class of '08. They had 12k+ applicants and accepted 3k of them, roughly 25%. 199 of those applicants were Political Science majors. It was quite humbling to know that I was one of them. 90% of those students were accepted from a California Community college.

He's OOS, so the 50/50 chance does not exactly reflect the truth of OPs situation. Frankly, given your GPA and OOS status you will most likely be rejected.

Also, UCB, or any UC, does not consider letters of recommendation unless explicitly asked for past the date of application submission. Though, I would still apply in case the adcoms are feeling generous, but I would not count on it.

What are your ECs, btw?

The above is correct. I had passed over the subject line when I read this initially and thought you had meant a CA Community College. I agree with the above assessment.
