Out of State Tuition

I've heard that my wife and I can pay Massachusetts state tuition rates for our daughter to go to an out of state state school, because that school offers her undergraduate major, and none of the Massachusetts state schools do. Can anyone offer any insight or confirm this?

not sure what group MA would fall into for the oos tuition waiver (different areas of the country fall into different groups) but that would only apply if her instate school does NOT offer her major.

[New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) - Home](http://www.nebhe.org) explains the tuition reduction program for each of the New England states.

The New England Board of Higher Education administers the tuition break program. I believe the break in tuition is to pay 150% of instate rates (instead of full oos rates). The average students saves $7,000 in tuition. This link provides more info

and here is a detailed breakdown of states/participating colleges

I looked quickly at this, and it seems she would have to attend a college here in New England. She wants to major in Forensics of Forensic Chemistry, and it seems none of the New England schools offer that as an undergraduate major. Pennsylvania has a few schools that offer this as a undergraduate degree however.

I found this site that lists some schools offering a Forensics degree (assoc, bach, masters). It is very specialized but there are some options here - including a CC offering an associates in Massachusetts! Good luck.

Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi, offers a B.S. in Forensic Chemistry with out of state tuition and fees set at $13,046.
[Chemistry & Biochemistry](<a href=“Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry | Ole Miss”>Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry | Ole Miss)

Loyola Chicago offers it

university of alabama BIRMINGHAM offers it (not UA)

cost is relatively low for oos (about 20K which includes R&B)

and has automatic scholarships based on act score and gpa for oos. i think top merit is 6K per year (brings cost down to 14K per year total)

my son will be attending uab in sci/tech honors and as a chem scholar…seriously looking at the forensic chem track…

I would think that that major would require a grad degree anyway, therefore the undergrad degree wouldn’t need to be in forensic chem.

It sounds like you’re trying to find a good deal. How much can you spend each year on your D’s education? What are her stats? (GPA, SAT or ACT). If they’re high enough, some schools might give her a scholarship that reduces the costs.

If you want the tuition break as a resident of a New England state, your child MUST enroll in one of the schools on the NEBHC site. These schools have agreed to participate in this tuition reduction plan. Your child cannot just choose any school in the country that offers this major…those other schools have not agreed to participate in this tuition reduction program for residents of New England states.

The other New England states don’t offer this major.
The OP was looking for a college where his daughter could get low tuition in this major by qualifying for in-state tuition. I don’t think there is such a place, but there are many places where his daughter could get low tuition in this major. (I like the UA-B idea.)

You might look at the SUNY’s as several of them have forensic majors, are closer to home, and the price is very reasonable for OOS. They also tend to offer higher merit awards to OOS kids. Alfred State and Buffalo State and a number of the CC’s offer forensic science degrees but I know that some of the universities, such as UB, are willing to let students design/tweak majors and are likely to have great science courses/facilities. Here’s a link to the general SUNY site:
