Who said that UM was going to choose “less qualified students over more qualifeid ones because they are Jewish, or black, or female, or whatever”?
IMHO…finding and recruiting well qualified students of all races, religions and sexes should be the goal of all world class universities.

Less qualified Jewish and female students over what kind of students? I have no idea what that means…

I’ve never heard of a diversity initiative that is designed to admit less qualified Jewish students. Usually it works the other way.

If we have a diversity initiative doesn’t it benefit the UofM to get more diverse students. Or does choosing a minority student over another only happen at schools where “what’s ur race” is a question and the try to keep certain ratios.

“An essential factor in our academic excellence is our diversity. When you bring together students, faculty and staff of different backgrounds and different experiences, you create an intellectual experience that is unmatched in higher education.”
President Mary Sue Coleman

There’s an entire web site devoted to what diversity means, university research, outreach, volunteer opportunities, etc. As a young person in a world class university and in a blink of an eye a contributor to society it’s important to understand that diversity has a very broad meaning and in our global world is an important concept to understand. Take a moment and look around you, each person you see brings a unique background, perspective, experiences, strengths and weaknesses that together elevates the whole. This is no different than businesses building an employee team or a coach building an athletic team. The whole is stronger than the individuals.
