I've noticed that a large amount (i think it might be more than half) of Rice's applicants are in-staters.
I'm from Virginia, so does anyone know if that gives me an edge in applications? Or does it hurt my chances, like it would if I applied to a school like UNC- Chapel Hill, where it is pretty solidly easier for in-state students to get accepted?

Being out of state is definitely a plus in your situation. The only reason Rice has a high percentage of in-state admits is because it receives a high number of in-state applications. Rice endorses the quality of diversity very strongly, and coming from a different state offers you a different culture/perspective to contribute to Rice as a whole.

UNC Chapel Hill is a state school, Rice is private. UNC requires a level of state acceptances, Rice seeks a balance but gets a lot of TX applications because of where it is located. Everyone in TX knows how good it is. It is a hidden gem if you are from a more distant state.

^^ is correct. the reason we have so many texans is because an even larger number apply. The number of Texan applicants turned down is massive.

If you applied to UT on the other hand, it would help to be for in state (especially money wise)

Also, remember the size of Texas; lots of kids also apply because there is a huge number of Texas students.

Also, from NC - you may be the only one applying to Rice. A lot of schools (esp in Houston) have half the graduating class apply. Then you get compared heavily to peers and it makes it much more difficult to get in.

^^ a lot of schools in Texas (esp in Houston)

I’m from Virginia too, so I was wondering the same thing. I haven’t met a lot of other people who are looking at Rice…actually, any other people who are looking at Rice.

Does anyone know if there is a map or a list or something that shows where the incoming class is from? I know some schools do that. I couldn’t find it on the website…

they will release the stats soon. the previous class demographics should be up

futurefrosh- yeah, it’s really weird how almost nobody from VA looks at Rice, even though it’s really a great school. The more i see about it, the more i like it.

Stats for for 2009,[Rice University | Faculty | Researchers](http://www.professor.rice.edu/professor/Enrollment_and_Demographics.asp?SnID=313249857)

49 of a little over 1% from VA. DD and a good friend of hers from same school attend and she made several other friends that were from VA too.
