Out of State vs. In State

Let me give you guys a little background of my family life. When I was in 5th grade, my mom and dad had a huge problem; they decided to split. They are still legally married, but they are not together. My mom does not have a huge income, and my dad doesn’t provide my mom any money besides paying for my phone and phone bills [It’s a California Phone]. He left for California, and I still keep in contact with him.

I’m currently attending school in a Florida High School. I’m currently in 11th grade. It has been about 6 years since my Dad has left for California.

I want to apply for Universities in California later, but I was wondering about the out of state vs in state tuition. I do not have a fortunate family that could provide such cost for an Out Of State. Is there anyway that I can make myself having an instate tuition? It might be a stretch, but at least, it’s good to try?

Preferably, I would not like to transfer out of my high school because I’m currently in the International Baccalaureate program. I would not like to leave my friends nor transfer, considering that different schools do stuff differently. Please provide help. Thank you in advance!

Thank you. I guess it will be hard to financially go to a college in California

If you want to derive California resident status from a California resident parent, you must move to California to live with that parent before your 18th birthday and establish the requisite intent and remain in California until school begins. Otherwise, you will be treated like any other adult coming to California to establish your legal residence.
