Out of state.

Hey everyone!
I have been looking throug colleges and wanted to know about out of state stuff.
Is there any other universities other than UNC that usually only accept in state students?
Thanks.

You’re mistaken. UNC accepts out of state applicants. I don’t think there is a single public university extant which does not accept applicants from outside their state or indeed, this country.

However, by their nature (receiving monies from the state government), the public universities’ first mandate is to educate the in-state population. Thus, they receive favorable tuition fees and likely favorable admit criteria…

In your example of UNC, they purposefully allot a quota of slots for OOS students. Thus, the competition for these slots may be MUCH more intense than for the in-state kids who are fewer in number relative to seats available.

The only schools for which state residency matters are public colleges & universities. And then, even those schools accept out of state students. They pay significantly more than in-state students.

Private colleges and universities care much less about state residency (primarily if they’re looking for geographic diversity), and all students pay the same rate (before any financial aid/merit aid).

I mean that UNC doesn’t always accept out of state.

That’s not true–I believe 20% of the student body is OOS.

OP is probably referring to state mandates to take certain percentage of in state students. I think NC public colleges do have to take certain percentage so fewer slots available for OOS. I’ve heard this about Virginia also (not sure if it’s official/unofficial).

"I mean that UNC doesn’t always accept out of state. " Like I said earlier, UNC’s OOS applicant pool has it much tougher. But they always accept some.
