How hard is it to get accepted for engineering at Berkeley out of state?
I know it is a whole lot easier in state.
Would the difficulty of admission be equivalent to other top engineering schools like Cornell, UMich etc?
And how good is the program compared to the aforementioned? Do you get enough research experience? Is a UC Berkeley engineering degree looked highly upon by employers?

To get accepted into engineering out of state = really hard, and is equivalent if not harder to get into than Cornell, UMich.
The engineering at Berkeley is top-notch and is looked highly upon by employers.

Berkeley engineering is tops. It's always listed in the top 3 of whatever rankings come out, competing with MIT and Stanford. It is difficult to apply into out of state, as difficult as, well, MIT or Stanford (or so I hear). Getting research experience depends entirely on yourself. I've had professors say in lecture that if anyone is interested in research that does well in the class, just talk to him. There are specific programs set up to hook up students and professors for research (see research.berkeley.edu for details).

Another big advantage of Berkeley is that a lot of recruiting goes on here. Every week there will be some major employer in to recruit from our campus (e.g. Microsoft, Amazon, Lockheed Martin, KLA Tencor, and Marvell to name some of the sessions I've been to). If you get into Berkeley and do well, you will have a lot of doors open employment-wise.
