Out of state

I am a Junior (soon to be Senior) who is considering applying to OSU next year. I attend high school in Virginia. I have several questions…

What would you all say the average GPA/SAT/ACT scores are for those who are out of state, and is it easier for out of state students to get accepted than those who are in state?

Would being a miniority strenghten my chances at being accepted?

Thank you!

I would say that while the average GPA/SAT/ACT is HIGHER for out-of-state students, it doesn't really have any effect on your chances of getting in. Rather, out-of-state students typically don't even apply to OSU unless they have pretty good stats.

That being said, I saw in the paper the stats for this year's incoming class. It looks like the middle 50% on the ACT was between at 25-30 with the average falling around a 27 or slightly higher. Meanwhile, easily over 90% of the class was from the top 25% of their high school class and over 50% were from the top 10%.

Minority status isn't given a LOT of weight at OSU, but I know it is considered. Additionally, scholarships are usually plentiful for OOS students that have good test scores and class ranks. My roommate and I came into Ohio State with nearly the same stats (I actually was even slightly higher in class rank), but since he was a minority student, he doesn't pay anything to go here.

Just curious, but why are you looking at OSU?

Well I was actually born in Columbus and lived there for six years until we moved. My entire family are huge buckeye fans (but this isn't why I want to go).

I am thinking of becoming an optometrist and OSU has one of the few optometry schools in the country. I know I could just go to Virginia colleges for their pre-optometry programs, but I would like to be back in my home state.

I know quite a few people who have graduated from the optometry school at OSU. It's supposed to be a good program. I haven't heard that it's more difficult for an OOS to get into OSU, but it is getting more competitive for all students to be admitted. This is a good thing.
