Out of State

I live in Wisconsin, and would like to study architecture. I like the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but it doesn't have an architecture program. Besides UW-Madison, for instate costs i have two choices of architecture schools- UW Milwaukee, and U Minnesota Twin Cites. However, i do not like either of those schools too much, and would rather go somewhere with better name recognition. My favorite school that i have looked at so far is the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. There is not much that i don't like about that school besides the cost- about $42,000 a year. I will have have to go there for at least six years, and will likely receive very minimal aid besides small loans.
So, should i go to one of the lesser known architecture schools, the expensive out of state school, or UW Madison where i would choose a different field of study?

Also, my guidance counselor said i would have little trouble getting accepted to any of the above schools.

What’s the matter with the name recognition of U Minnesota Twin Cites? It’s a Big Ten school - that’s pretty major name recognition!

Since you live in Wisconsin you would be eligible for the MSEP schools where you would only pay 150% of instate tuition If I remember correctly the participating states include Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota Minnesota and Wisconsin. I’ve probably forgotten one of the states but if you go to the Midwest Student Exchange website it will list the states and the schools involved. I honestly don’t know the reputation for any architecture programs or if they even offer the major but it may be a starting point for you to check out additional schools if you are unsatisfied with your current choices.

I’ve never heard of this anywhere.
is this a legit program? is the university of Michigan a participant in it?

It is legit. It isn’t talked about a lot but I think it should be. I will try to add the link. Univ of Michigan is not included. Only select schools are. Also for each school you need to verify the program is included. For some schools all the programs are included but in others it’s only selected ones or they only allow so many kids from out of state to use the MSEP. The website is pretty easy to use.

The only MHEC institution rivaling U of Minn.-Twin Cities in name recognition is the U of Kansas, and MHEC doesn’t cover Architecture there.
