Out of stater choosing dorms!!!

Hi all,
I don't know which dorm to choose. I want to socialize and party hard, yet also work hard (I'm doing premed). I go to boarding school now, so I know that I love smaller, quieter dorms. My first choice is the honors dorms (I'm nonhonors) and second probably San Jac or Moore-Hill. Do you think by not living in Jester, I will have a disadvantage socially? I won't know ANYONE since I'm out of state, so is it difficult to get to know a lot of freshmen in Jester?

I want a balance of work and play. If I will be missing out of the 'freshman experience' then do you think Jester is worth the noise?

Thanks all!!!

P.S. I don't want to be in residential FIG, I'm basically deciding between Honors, San Jac, Moore-Hill, and Jester. Thanks

Since you’re still deciding, I’m assume you haven’t sent your housing contract yet. By now, San Jac and Moore-Hill will have many applications and you’ll less likely to get in. From what I’ve heard, Jester is occasionally noisy, but for the most part, it’s decent. I’m still deciding too and I think I’m going with Jester.

Whether shishkabobbed gets into San Jac or not depends on when shishkabobbed did the initial application for housing, not when he or she signs the contract.

You’re talking about the initial $50, right?

No I submitted the $50 on December 2…and on the threads it said I might have a “fighting chance”

Jester is the biggest loudest and nastiest dorm at UT…

it does have the wendies and whatnot…

as a pre-med i hope you plan on studying in a lounge/library or with headphones

Personally, I think Jester’s repuation exceeds how ‘bad’ it is. Sure, since it’s the largest dorm it will have the most complaints, and of course it’s not new. But I think that’s more a function of how many people live there (more people to spill stuff, etc).

San Jacinto is <5 minute walk from Jester, so you’ll be fine if you want to hang out with people from Jester. Also, Jester has one of the main dining halls, so you’ll be going there to eat anyway (if you’re smart – the other food places around it such as those in San Jac, and 1st floor of Jester are probably 2x as expensive as the dining hall). Also, since San Jacinto has private bath, it’ll take more perogative on your part if you want to meet people – people usually mind their own business.

I heard people in Moore-Hill like it, but there’s no elevator, if that’s important to you.
Another personal opinion of mine is that the honors dorms I would probably rate as some of the worst on campus (ironically). Littlefield is alright, from what I hear, but I believe the other ones don’t even have sinks in the rooms. I actually did an test on Blanton’s bathrooms and they were by far the worst (bacterially) in all the dorms.

Finally, keep in mind that if you need a quiet space to study, you can go many places on campus, such as one of the many libraries, or random alcoves you can find on campus.

Rooms in Andrews and Carrothers have sinks.

Littlefield is in the honors quad but it is not an honors dorm.
