Out-of-stater wants into UNC

I have heard that it is damn near impossible to get into UNC as an out-of-state applicant. According to collegeboard, only 17% of their student body comes from outside of North Carolina. Berkeley (another school I am considering) is even worse, with only 7%. My question is: am I qualified enough to have a decent shot at UNC?

I also know I will have good excellent recs and am I strong writer so my essays should be solid. My brother is also in his last year of grad school there (philosophy) and will be graduating next summer. Thoughts???

Thanks in advance.

bumpitty bump

You should be ok, I think. It's hard, but near-impossible is hyperbolizing. Even OOS it's still easier to get into that schools like top tier privates. Cal should be much harder to get into OOS, I imagine. And more pricey. Those SAT IIs seem kind of low compared to the rest of your app, but that's just an observation, I don't think it would affect your chances.

Are you taking more APs? Having just 2 might hurt you.

Taking at least 2 more APs in my senior year, yes. 2 was the maximum number I could take as a junior at my school. And I plan to retake some of my SAT IIs to improve my scores.

Just a question, but what other quality unis/private schools do you think I might be a good fit for? Thanks.

You need +700 for SAT IIs.

So you're saying my 34 ACT score can't overcome a 660 and 670 on my SAT IIs? :(

It's safe to have +700 on SAT IIs.

Sorry, old thread - but why wouldn't you just submit your 34 ACT and not worry about sending your subject tests?

because so many people apply from out-of-state, you want to make yourself stand out as much as possible. not taking SAT IIs would probably look bad since everyone else most likely has them

Apply early and really concentrate on the essays. UNC really does pay a lot of attention to the essays. Send me a PM and I will explain a few other things that I think you should be aware of.

i dont think the OP is here anymore...

eadad, are those tips for the essays?
