Out-of-Stater

I’m an out-of-stater. Is it bad for me to want to apply to on of the UCs (one of the lower ones), just so that I can attend a university in California? Is it worth it to pay the first year of college as an out-of-stater? Truth please (I’m from TX, btw).

The UCs are all really great schools, from top to bottom. It is a bit more expensive if you're from out of state, so you might want to ask yourself exactly why you want to go to a UC. If you really want to come out to California and maybe live here afterward, then that's a pretty good reason. Or if a UC school has a certain program or major that you're really interested in that you can't get in your home state. I know that UT-Austin is a great school, so you might want to consider it. But you really can't go wrong with a UC school and hopefully after a couple years you can establish residency so that you can pay in-state fees and make it a lot cheaper for you.

What are the chances for an out-of-stater at any UC school?

I can't say unless we know your stats.

You have good stats, If California is your ultimate goal, you might want to consider private colleges in CA too. USC is sort of UCish and if they'd be more likely to give better financial aid being private and all. What's your major and are you into the big school type thing, cause there are some other good smaller privates in CA. The UCs are good though, just would be expensive out-of-state which still could be cheaper than some privates depending on financial aid.

I'm into privates, but they are expensive...and I don't know if it'd be wise just to dish out 20K+/year. I don't know; I just think that living in California would be cool! Is there a pretty decent college/university where I could go for cheap (grants/scholarships could pay for it)? Thanks! I was looking at Pepperdine...but it is like alot for one year!

depends on your major.....if you wanna go into engineering, architecture or business try cal poly slo...good cal state school with cheaper tuition than a uc and perfect college town next to the coast plus hot girls

History major

my cousin applied to usc from out of state and they offered her 15k aid, which would make USC cost her less than a UC (15k vs 20k).

may i ask why you want to come to california? it better not be because you watch a bunch of the OC, cause if it is...

I live in the OC. It's just like the show. Seriously. Actually, just kidding.

It will get harder for you to get in to the UC's from out of state, we have so many qualified students whose parents pay taxes here that the policy is to let the local kids use what their parents pay for. Texas has some great schools, but if you really want to try for a state school here, consider UC Merced, it is new and looking for quality students.
